Bohannon

LP (Item 16297) Dakar, 1975 — Condition: Near Mint-

A massive amount of fast funk groovers from the mighty Hamilton Bohannon – just the kind of skittish, upbeat, and totally amazing tracks that have made him a legend for years! The sound is really stripped down – usually just bass, drums, and guitar – wrapped together in this groove that's super tight, but not slick at all – like someone had dug deep into the best resources of the funky 45 underground, then pushed them to the limit! The guitar work alone is completely amazing – razor-sharp perfection at a level that blows away any previous chicken scratch lines – and titles include "Can You Feel It", "Think Of Me", "The Funky Reggae", "The Bohannon Walk", "Bohannon's Beat Part 1", and "Gentle Breeze".  © 1996-2021, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(Cover has light wear and aging.)

Near Mint - (minus)

  • Black vinyl that may show a slight amount of dust or dirt.
  • Should still be very shiny under a light, even with slight amount of dust on surface.
  • One or two small marks that would make an otherwise near perfect record slightly less so. These marks cannot be too deep, and should only be surface marks that won't affect play, but might detract from the looks.
  • May have some flaws and discoloration in the vinyl, but only those that would be intrinsic to the pressing. These should disappear when the record is tilted under the light, and will only show up when looking straight at the record. (Buddah and ABC pressings from the 70's are a good example of this.)
  • May have some slight marks from aging of the paper sleeve on the vinyl.
  • Possible minor surface noise when played.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

War & Peace
Gordy, 1970. Very Good+
A real breakout album for Edwin Starr – and the kind of full-on set that really helped give his music a bold new focus! Starr had already scored nicely on some playful tracks from the Motor City scene of the late 60s – but here, he emerges as a singer with a lot more depth than before ... LP, Vinyl record album

Escorts

3 Down 4 To Go
Alithia, 1974. Very Good+
A great album of sweet soul – and one recorded by a bunch of prisoners at the Rahway Correctional Facility! This was the group's second album, and by this point, three of the members had left prison – hence the "3 Down, 4 To Go" title – but that change in status doesn't ... LP, Vinyl record album

Young Hearts

Sweet Soul Shakin'
Minit, Late 60s. Very Good+
A rare early album by The Young Hearts – the group who later went onto cut more modern soul sounding tracks for 20th Century, but who are operating here in a nice tight northern soul style! Eddie Drennon & BBS

Collage
Friends & Co, 1975. Very Good+
A 70s New York classic – the first and best album by Eddie Drennon! Charles Brimmer

Expression Of Soul
Chelsea, 1975. Very Good+

Ray Charles

Genius + Soul = Jazz
Impulse, 1960. Sealed Gatefold
A wonderful chapter in the career of Ray Charles – and a key album in helping raise his respect level a notch or two in the early 60s! Cadet, Late 60s. Very Good+
One of McDuff's fantastic Cadet LPs, and one that features the funky funky organist in a set of crazy arrangements written by him and Richard Evans. Lou Donaldson

Sweet Lou
Blue Note, 1974. Sealed
Sweet Lou, but funky Lou too – a perfect blend of modes that makes for one of Donaldson's last great albums for Blue Note! The set's got some fuller arrangements from Horace Ott – but given Ott's work in the indie soul world during the 60s, there's still a nice edge to the record too ... LP, Vinyl record album

Mellow Madness
A&M, 1973. Sealed
A really great, oft-overlooked album from the best period of Quincy Jones!
