Red Garland's really cooking on this late 50s set – thanks to some added conga work from Ray Barretto on most of the album's tracks – and that great little groove that Barretto's percussion brought to some other soul jazz cookers like this from the time! Garland still gets plenty of space to spin out in that lyrical style he did better than just about anyone else – and core trio rhythm support is from George Joyner on bass and Charlie Persip on drums, who burn nicely when Barretto sits out – although we're definitely partial to the more complicated grooves featured with Ray. Titles include "Rojo", "Mr. Wonderful", "We Kiss In A Shadow", "Darling Je Vous Aime Beaucoup", and the nice groover "Ralph J Gleason Blues". © 1996-2024, Dusty Groove, Inc.
