Mr Music

LP (Item 16233) RCA, 1954 — Condition: Near Mint-

A tight little record – with a strong focus on Al Cohn's solo work! Al's the lead soloist in a number of largish groups that are often tightly arranged, but which let the leader break out nicely – cutting with an edge on his tenor that's sometimes even sharper than usual. Cohn handled most of the arrangements – but a few are by Johnny Carisi, Ralph Burns, or Manny Albam –a nd players include Joe Newman on trumpet, Billy Byaers and Frank Rehak on trombone, Gene Quill on alto, and Jimmy Raney on guitar. Proceedings are tight, but never too uptight – and titles include "Cabin In The Sky", "Lullaby Of Birdland", "This Reminds Me Of You", "Move", "Cohn My Way", "La Ronde", and "Never Never Land".  © 1996-2020, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(Nice original pressing!)

Near Mint - (minus)

  • Black vinyl that may show a slight amount of dust or dirt.
  • Should still be very shiny under a light, even with slight amount of dust on surface.
  • One or two small marks that would make an otherwise near perfect record slightly less so. These marks cannot be too deep, and should only be surface marks that won't affect play, but might detract from the looks.
  • May have some flaws and discoloration in the vinyl, but only those that would be intrinsic to the pressing. These should disappear when the record is tilted under the light, and will only show up when looking straight at the record. (Buddah and ABC pressings from the 70's are a good example of this.)
  • May have some slight marks from aging of the paper sleeve on the vinyl.
  • Possible minor surface noise when played.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

The Natural Seven is Al's septet that features Joe Newman, Frank Rehack, Freddie Green, Milt Hinton, Nat Pierce, and Osie Johnson. Panic Is On
RCA, Mid 50s. Very Good+ Gatefold
No panic here – just tightly-crafted jazz, and one of the better RCA small combo sessions of the 50's! Charlie Barnet & His Orchestra

Redskin Romp
RCA, 1955. Near Mint-
Later work from swing sax giant Charlie Barnet. Five

Groundbreaking work on vibes by Gary Burton – recorded in a setting that's live and open, yet quite groovy too! David Amram

What Is An Amram?
RCA, Early 70s. Near Mint-
Weird RCA promo designed to break the amazing talents of David Amram upon the unsuspecting world. Sonny Rollins

Bridge (2nd pressing)
RCA, 1962. Very Good+
A landmark album from Sonny Rollins – one that marked his comeback in the early 60s, after a brief period of retirement, and which also initiated a string of incredible recordings with guitarist Jim Hall. Bitches Brew
Columbia, 1969. Very Good- 2LP Gatefold
One of the few cases in jazz where an oft-played classic still resonates with power!
