Panic Is On

LP (Item 16232) RCA, Mid 50s — Condition: Very Good+
Gatefold

No panic here – just tightly-crafted jazz, and one of the better RCA small combo sessions of the 50's! Trumpeter Nick Travis leads the group in that well-honed style that RCA was carving at the time – work that was as arranged as much of the recordings coming out of the west coast, but with a bit of a freer edge on the solo work. The group's pretty great overall – with Al Cohn on tenor, Johnny Williams on piano, Teddy Kotick on bass, and Art Mardigan on drums – and titles include "Nick's Knacks", "Jazzbo's Jaunt", "In the Nick Of Time", and "Cohn Pone". Great Jim Flora cover, too!  © 1996-2020, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(Vinyl is nice – and cover is beautiful!)

Very Good + (plus)

  • Vinyl should be very clean, but can have less luster than near mint.
  • Should still shine under a light, but one or two marks may show up when tilted.
  • Can have a few small marks that may show up easily, but which do not affect play at all. Most marks of this quality will disappear when the record is tilted, and will not be felt with the back of a fingernail.
  • This is the kind of record that will play "near mint", but which will have some signs of use (although not major ones).
  • May have slight surface noise when played.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Charlie Barnet & His Orchestra

Redskin Romp
RCA, 1955. Near Mint-
Later work from swing sax giant Charlie Barnet. While this theme seems rather un-PC these days, the style here is even more sophisticated than before – as the Barnet groove is updated with some nice 50s arrangements from Billy May. Includes Barnet's famous playing of "Cherokee", ... LP, Vinyl record album

Five
RCA, Mid 50s. Near Mint-
The Five was a nom-du-session for this west coast group featuring tenorist Bill Perkins, trumpeter Conte Candoli, and pianist Pete Jolly – over a set of arrangements and compositions by Shorty Rogers. Groundbreaking work on vibes by Gary Burton – recorded in a setting that's live and open, yet quite groovy too! David Amram

What Is An Amram?
RCA, Early 70s. Near Mint-
Weird RCA promo designed to break the amazing talents of David Amram upon the unsuspecting world. Bridge (2nd pressing)
RCA, 1962. Very Good+
A landmark album from Sonny Rollins – one that marked his comeback in the early 60s, after a brief period of retirement, and which also initiated a string of incredible recordings with guitarist Jim Hall. A killer set of grooves from vibes legend Johnny Lytle – one of the first and one of the few to ever combine vibes with Hammond organ – in this case, the work of Milt Harris on the keys!
