Afro/American Sketches

LP (Item 16231) Prestige, 1961 — Condition: Good

One of the first larger concept albums from Oliver Nelson – and a set that really marked a strong step forward as a jazz arranger! The album is one long suite – as you might guess from the title – with righteous themes that deal not just with rising independence in postwar Africa, but also the Civil Rights struggle in the US – performed by a superb lineup that includes Jerry Dodgion on alto and flute, Eric Dixon on flute and tenor, Joe Neman and Ernie Royal on trumpets, Melba Liston and Billy Byers on trombones, Patti Brown on piano, Art Davis on bass, and Ray Barretto on congas. Nelson is fantastic too – and blows tenor and alto with some fantastic moments. Passages of the suite include "Disillusioned", "Freedom Dance", "Emancipation Blues", and "Jungleaire".  © 1996-2020, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(Yellow and black label NJ pressing with deep groove and RVG etch. Cover has some wear and aging.)

Good

  • A record that you'd buy to play, cheap, but which you wouldn't buy for collecting.
  • Will have marks across all parts of the playing surface, and will most likely play with surface noise throughout. May have some other significant flaws, such as residue, or a track that skips.
  • In most cases, a poor quality copy of a very difficult to find record.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Very groovy stuff! Although the bulk of the material on this album is "pops meet jazz", in the hands of Oliver Nelson, it's transformed into something wonderful – with just the right blend of jazz to keep things lively. The arrangements have a nice off-kilter sound that works well ... LP, Vinyl record album

Hampton Hawes

Northern Windows
Prestige, 1974. Near Mint-
One of the best David Axelrod-assisted albums from the early 70s – a sweet batch of funky cuts with arrangements and backings handled by Axe, and loads of great keyboard lines from the legendary Hampton Hawes! The record really bubbles with the warm and soulful approach Axelrod was using at ... LP, Vinyl record album

Hampton Hawes

Playin In The Yard
Prestige, 1973. Very Good+
Very very nice electric material by Hampton, recorded live at Montreux in 1973, and with a light open-ended groove that's got a sweet mellow feel. The record is similar to some of Ahmad Jamal's from the same time – with a sound that's not really funk, but which has some wonderful soulful ... LP, Vinyl record album

Peas & Rice
Prestige, 1967. Very Good+
Stunning stuff – and one of the few great records that vibist Freddie McCoy cut for Prestige! Very different than the usual funky vibesmen, Freddie's got a style that leads itself nicely to modal pop soul jazz – as you'll hear on the short little groovers that fill up this album, all ... Steve Lacy

Soprano Sax
Prestige, 1957. Sealed
A stone classic from Steve Lacy – a record that was nearly as important to the soprano sax in jazz as it was to Lacy in his career! In one record, Lacy almost single-handedly takes the soprano sax into the modern age – working before Coltrane and others to push the instrument from its ... LP, Vinyl record album

A killer diller of a live set from Brother Jack McDuff – a cut that burns with energy that almost beats his studio 60s classics for Prestige! MJQ

Nice stuff from the early days of the MJQ – recorded back when Kenny Clarke was still playing drums with the group, and giving them a bit more of a bottom!
