The album that finally made the world sit up and notice that Solange is a completely great artist on her own – and hardly needs to ever be spoken of in terms that involve her sister! The set's got a vibe that's as personal and put out there as Solange's image on the cover – music that's more openly expressive than you'd expect for a mainstream soul record, and linked together with these really creative interludes that continue the unique spirit of the songs and really makes the whole thing work together as one. Solange is clearly the leading attraction, but the set also features guest appearances from Q-Tip, Lil Wayne, Sampha, Kelela, Nia Andrews, and Kelly Rowland – on titles that include "Rise", "Cranes In The Sky", "Mad", "Don't Touch My Hair", "Junie", "Don't Wish Me Well", "Scales", "Tina Taught Me", and "The Chosen Ones".  © 1996-2024, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Used CD Grade

We only use the grade "Used CD" for non-new CDs. This all-encompassing grade was chosen it because we only buy and offer used CDs in the best possible condition.

When you purchase a used CD you can expect the disc to be free of all but the lightest of surface marks, the case to be clean (we often change the cases ourselves), and the booklet to be in good shape. Used CDs may show some signs of use, but if there are significant details or defects we will describe the item's condition (just like we do with LPs), so look for notes on cutout marks, stickers, promo stamps or other details before ordering.

All of our used CDs are guaranteed to play without skipping or flaws. After you receive a used CD from Dusty Groove, you have 1 week to play it to determine that it plays correctly. If it does not, you can request a return for a full refund.

Music World/Geffen, 2008. Used
One of the coolest modern soul albums of the late 00s – Solange's soulful and quite creative Sol-Angel & The Hadley St Dream LP – with classic 70s soul spirit inflected numbers that still feel very much of the present day – this is a record that really should have took off in ... CD

Leon Bridges

Coming Home
Columbia, 2015. Used
An album with a very classic look on the cover – and an equally classic sound to match – one that takes us back to some of the hippest, coolest work by early 60s singers like Sam Cooke or Marvin Gaye! Both artists are a good comparison here, as Leon Bridges is unabashedly in the same ... CD

Goapele

Even Closer
Columbia/Skyblaze, 2002. Used
Heavy soul from the Bay Area scene – a fantastic set of tracks from the enigmatic Goapele! Goapele's an underground singer with a really righteous feel – and she's not afraid to use some heavy beats and funk to send her message home. The set's got a really well integrated instrumental ... CD

Ryan Shaw

Real Love
Dynatone, 2012. Used
Real Love and real soul from Ryan Shaw – the best we've heard from him! On this album he once again shows love for classic American soul, be it emotive anthems, ballads or funk-tinged slower cookers. The production by Jimmy Bralower and Jimmy Gale – the latter of whom also handles a ... CD

Frank McComb

Truth Vol 1
Expansion (UK), 2003. Used
An instant soul classic from singer Frank McComb – awash in warm touches that take us back to the classic 70s work of Donnie Hathaway and Stevie Wonder – but done with a sound that clearly Frank's own! The instrumentation is enough to make us love the record – with lots of Fender ... CD

Lizz Wright

Dreaming Wide Awake
Verve, 2005. Used
The second outing from vocalist Lizz Wright – done in the same sweetly folksy style as her debut, but in a way that seems to have even more of a focus overall. The backing on the set is especially nice – mostly just spare keyboards, bass, and drums, plus some great work on acoustic ... CD

Jazzyfatnastees

Once & Future
MCA, 1999. Used
The first album from the Jazzyfatnastees – a stripped-down assemblage of beats, keys, and wickedly soulful vocals! The set's got a really spare approach that's different than their later work – really letting the focus on the vocals take root, as the girls' incredible voices play back ... CD
Dwitza/Membran (Germany), 2013. Used
Tremendous work from Ed Motta – a record that not only lives up to all the promise we've found in his music over the years – but which also goes way way beyond, and really knocks it out of the park! The title here is no lie, as Ed's a huge fan of AOR modes from the 70s – ... CD

Cee-Lo

Lady Killer
Elektra, 2010. Used
One of the records that forever cemented Cee-Lo's role in the contemporary soul cosmos – a set that's got the singer in superstar territory that nobody could have imagined back when he was part of the Goodie Mob! Here, Cee-Lo's an uber-confident soul singer – soaring with a spirit that ... CD

Georgia Anne Muldrow

Worthnothings EP
Stones Throw, 2006. Used
A stunner of a debut EP from Georgia Anne Muldrow – the first, and to date the only female singler on Stones Throw! Georgia may be a somewhat familiar name to fans of the SA-RA Creative Partners and Platinum Pied Pipers – as she's collaborated with both camps. She also shares an ... CD
Universal (France), 2007. Used
An amazing departure in sound for Meshell Ndegeocello – a record that firmly delivers on the earlier promise of her Article 3 EP! As with that one, the sound here is quite different than the funky soul of Meshell's earliest work back in the 90s – an almost-experimental blend of fuzz, ... CD
