❔
A landmark album – not only for Bob James, but for CTI and the Fender Rhodes as well! This is the album where all the magic starts – the first of many extremely successful albums that Bob recorded during the 70s under his own name, and almost the birthplace of the modern hip hop keyboard sample line! The album's stuffed with great numbers – including a sublime reading of "Feel Like Making Love", and the classic "Nautilus" – a slow, dark, funky tune that's worth the price of the album alone! Other tracks include "Valley Of The Shadows", "Night On Bald Mountain", and "Soulero".  © 1996-2024, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(Original pressing with Van Gelder stamp. Vinyl has some light heat.)

Very Good

  • Vinyl can have some dirt, but nothing major.
  • May not shine under light, but should still be pretty clean, and not too dirty.
  • May have a number of marks (5 to 10 at most), and obvious signs of play, but never a big cluster of them, or any major mark that would be very deep. Most marks should still not click under a fingernail.
  • May not look near perfect, but should play fairly well, with slight surface noise, and the occasional click in part of a song, but never throughout a whole song or more.
  • This is clearly a copy that was played by someone a number of times, but which could also be a good "play copy" for someone new.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Bob James

Genie
CTI, 1983. Near Mint-
A smooth set of keyboard instrumentals built around Bob James' famous theme to the TV show Taxi – also known as "Angela", and probably the way that most mainstream folks know Bob's work! And although that track was plenty famous, it's still a really great number that echoes out ... LP, Vinyl record album

Bob James

Bold Conceptions
Mercury, 1962. Near Mint-
Early early work by Bob James – recorded years before his classic 70s sides on electric piano, and in a brightly modern mode that recalls the spirit of Steve Kuhn and Paul Bley at the time! The set's a trio session – produced by Quincy Jones, who'd heard the young James and rushed him ... LP, Vinyl record album

The 4th in Bob James legendary run of Fender Rhodes classics for CTI – and a record that still has him working with the dark edges that made the first few so great! George Benson

Pacific Fire
CTI, 1975. Near Mint-
Unusual work from the great George Benson – a wonderful session that was recorded by CTI during George's classic years for the label – but issued only briefly a number of years later, and slightly lost amongst the rest of his catalog! A&M/CTI, 1969. Near Mint-
Quite a rare one from George Benson – a set recorded during his late 60s run during the CTI/A&M years – but one that wasn't formally issued until the mid 80s! The style here is a great link between some of Benson's fuller work of the time, and some of the leaner grooves he'd cut ... LP, Vinyl record album

White Rabbit
CTI, 1971. Near Mint- Gatefold
One of the moodiest sessions on CTI from the early days – and a landmark album that took George Benson from the funky jazz scene into the upper reaches of 70s jazz. Stanley Turrentine meets Bob James – on a record that's one of the 70s classics on CTI!
