Tell It The Way It Is!

LP (Item 15957) Impulse, 1963 — Condition: Very Good
Gatefold
Paul Gonsalves tells it the way it is – but in a hiply swinging sort of way that showcases his rising star as a leader in the 60s! The groove here is freed up from some of the earlier cliches in Gonsalves' work with larger groups – leaving a lot more room for his great sense of tone and timing, and creating some wonderful new rhythms for him to open up on. Bits of Ellingtonia are mixed with groovier 60s rhythms – played by a group that also includes Johnny Hodges on tenor, Ray Nance and Rolf Ericson on trumpet, and Walter Bishop Jr. on piano. Titles include a nice 11 minute long version of "Tell It The Way It Is", plus "Impulsive", "Body & Soul", and "Rapscallion in Rab's Canyon".  © 1996-2023, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(Rainbow label stereo pressing with Van Gelder stamp. Cover has some surface wear, aging, small peeled spots at the bottom right corner, names in pen inside the gatefold, and some tears in the back panel at the opening.)

Very Good

  • Vinyl can have some dirt, but nothing major.
  • May not shine under light, but should still be pretty clean, and not too dirty.
  • May have a number of marks (5 to 10 at most), and obvious signs of play, but never a big cluster of them, or any major mark that would be very deep. Most marks should still not click under a fingernail.
  • May not look near perfect, but should play fairly well, with slight surface noise, and the occasional click in part of a song, but never throughout a whole song or more.
  • This is clearly a copy that was played by someone a number of times, but which could also be a good "play copy" for someone new.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Cleopatra Feelin' Jazzy
Impulse, 1963. Very Good+
A really great record – and one that's hardly what you'd guess from the title! Sure, the Cleopatra movie was a giant hit in the 60s – but it also gave the chance for some jazzmen to explore more exotic territory – as was also the case with material from Spartacus and Lawrence Of ... John Coltrane

Om
Impulse, 1965. Very Good+ Gatefold
A pure statement of being and essence – and one of John Coltrane's spiritual masterpieces from the 60s! The 1965 recording was one of Trane's most adventurous so far – as it featured just one album-length track, building up out of relatively free expressions from Coltrane in the studio ... Impulse, 1973. Very Good+ Gatefold
We love this record! Although Gato Barbieri has put out a few snoozers in his career, this amazing first chapter of his Latin venture for Impulse is an incredible record throughout – one of the greatest Impulse sessions of the 70s! Gato returns to his native Argentina for the session – ... LP, Vinyl record album

Milt Jackson

Jazz N Samba
Impulse, 1964. Very Good+ Gatefold
This may not be Milt Jackson's purest album – but oh how we love it! Milt's working here more in a Verve pop jazz mode than a highbrow third stream one – with bossa backings on about half the album, and good small combo work on the rest. The first half features Jimmy Heath on tenor, ... LP, Vinyl record album
Impulse, 1962. Near Mint- Gatefold
A legendary meeting of two classic jazz talents late in their careers – in a setting that's ideal to bring out all the complexity of their well-honed genius! The approach of the album is mostly an Ellington one – as the group features some of Duke's stalwarts, like Ray Nance on trumpet ... LP, Vinyl record album

Coleman Hawkins

Desafinado
Impulse, 1964. Very Good+ Gatefold
The Hawk, in prime late form, lays down some beautiful tenor solos over gentle bossa nova accompaniment – working in a mode that's much more satisfying than just a "classic player meets bossa" session, angularly crafting the solos with that dark edge that he had in all of his later ... John Coltrane

Kulu Se Mama
Impulse, 1966. Very Good+ Gatefold
One of our favorite albums ever from John Coltrane – but a record that's sometimes eclipsed by the genius of A Love Supreme! The feel here is very similar to that one – long tracks that introduce a new mode of searching, spiritual jazz for the 60s – one that's performed by a core ... LP, Vinyl record album

Gabor Szabo

Best Of Gabor Szabo
Impulse, Late 60s. Very Good Gatefold
A record that's every bit as beautiful and striking as its cover – a cool collection of all the wonderful guitar-driven grooves that guitarist Gabor Szabo created for Impulse Records in the 60s! Szabo first rose to fame working with Chico Hamilton – but soon established himself as one ... LP, Vinyl record album

Out Of The Cool
Impulse, 1961. Near Mint-
A pivotal session for Gil Evans – one that brought his genius to the American public strongly and successfully, without the help of Miles Davis! Impulse, 1960s. Near Mint- 2LP Gatefold
A 2 LP retrospective of some of the more spiritual exploratory sides 'Trane was cutting in the mid to late '60's for Impulse. Joe Daley with Hal Russell

Joe Daley Trio At Newport 63
RCA, 1963. Very Good+
A rare modern jazz set from the early 60s – noteworthy in that it's one of the few recordings from the time of Chicago tenorist Joe Daley – who works here in a trio with the young Hal Russell on drums! And yes, that's the same Hal that later broke out strongly in the Windy City avant ... LP, Vinyl record album
