French Disco Boogie Sounds Vol 3 – 1977 to 1987 – Selected By Charles Maurice

LP (Item 159247) Favorite (France), Late 70s/Early 80s — Condition: Sealed
2LP
A decade's worth of slinky sounds from the French scene – a good number of which were recorded after the big disco boom years in the US – at a time when the European clubs kept things going with some fresh flavors of their own! The style here isn't as overtly disco as you might think – as the grooves are nice and open – often a bit more midtempo than upbeat, with currents from modern soul and some of the global cultures that intersected through the wide musical world of Paris! In fact, the whole thing's more of a discovery of new grooves than a French take on familiar styles – as you'll discover amidst tracks that include "Lait De Coco (dub)" by Maya, "Segregation" by Nst Cophies, "Funky & Fire" by Janet N'Diaye Lokamba, "Money" by Kke, "Flash" by Zorgus, "Give Me Back My Song" by Wally & Shane, "Looking For You" by JEKYS, "Qu'Est-Ce Que Tu Fais Par Amour" by Joel Dayde, "Listen To The Music (12" mix)" by Judy Carter, "Un Peu D'Amour" by Silence, and "Funky Baby Love" by Paul Fathy.  © 1996-2023, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Sealed

This is what it says, that the record is still held fast in shrink-wrap. We tend to be pretty suspicious about these things, so if the shrink-wrap doesn't look original, or if the record seems to have undergone some damage over time, we'll probably take it out of the wrapper to ensure that it's in good shape — which is why we don't have more of these. In some cases the shrink-wrap may be torn in spots, but if it's not possible the record has been taken out and played, the record will still qualify as "Sealed".

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Perfect Toy (Germany), Late 60s/Early 70s. Sealed
Funky sounds from the rock side of the musical spectrum – music by artists who might have worked in psych or garage modes in the 60s, but also had a pretty darn heavy groove – and a fair bit of inspiration from 60s soul in their vocals! The tracks are wonderful – really unlikely ... LP, Vinyl record album
Brutal (UK), 2010. Sealed 2LP
Loads of 80s elements here – drum fills, post-punk guitars, keyboard bits, and more – all mixed up superbly from Dom Thomas – with the same sort of B-Music/Finders Keepers style we love in his other projects! There's plenty of bits here that seem familiar, but they're nicely ... LP, Vinyl record album
How Do You Are (Germany), Late 70s/1980s. Sealed 2LP Gatefold

Stunningly great compilation of rare jazz tracks from the East German state-run Amiga label. Stevie Wonder

Innervisions
Tamla, 1973. Very Good+ Gatefold
One of the best Stevie Wonder albums ever! Stevie's moving into god-like territory here – handling a multitude of styles, all well, and crafting some of the most sophisticated soul of his generation. The album's got the same jazzy references you'll find on the best work by Donny Hathaway ... LP, Vinyl record album

Johnny Guitar Watson

Love Jones
DJM, 1980. Near Mint-
One of the last great records by Johnny Guitar Watson – and an album that's got some wonderfully subdued moments, which is a real relief after some of the too-funky bits on some of his other sets from the late 70s! Johnny returns to the tight soul of the mid 70s Fantasy LPs – still ... LP, Vinyl record album
Smash, 1964. Very Good+ Gatefold
One of the stranger James Brown albums from the 60s! The record is one of the only vocal albums he cut for the Smash label – and it was issued during a time when James was strangely contracted to two labels – King and Smash. His dual contract situation was that he couldn't record any ... LP, Vinyl record album

Christmas Jollies
Salsoul, 1976. Very Good
Philly classics for the Holidays! Tamla, 1979. Near Mint- 2LP Trifold
Very high concept work from Stevie Wonder! The record is, in fact, about the "secret life of plants" – partially used as a soundtrack for a film of the same name, but also acting as kind of a storybook in itself! Stevie's exploring a wide range of plant life and plant themes on ... LP, Vinyl record album

Curtis Mayfield

Got To Find A Way
Curtom, 1974. Near Mint-
A great album that's often overlooked amidst the flurry of early 70's releases on Curtom, but which stands as one of Mayfield's greatest from the 70s! In fact, we'd say that the album's one that we enjoy putting on more than most – because the songs are less familiar, and not nearly as ... LP, Vinyl record album
