Benny Green's trombone playing has always been a bright light in a sometimes bleak side of the jazz spectrum. His style is deep and soulful, and he swings the trombone with a fluidity that most would apply to hardbop trumpet players. This sweet quintet session from 1961 has him playing in a very tight combo with Johnny Griffin, Junior Mance, Paul Chambers, and Ben Riley – and the sound is as raw as some of the best soul jazz sessions on Jazzland from the time.
