Let's Do It Again

LP (Item 15822) Curtom, 1975 — Condition: Sealed
One of our favorite albums ever from The Staple Singers – and that's really saying a lot, as they cut a huge amount of really great records! The album's an unusual collaboration between the group and Curtis Mayfield – one that forges the great vocal styles they were developing at Stax Records with some of the hip soundtrack modes that Curtis had created for Superfly – a blend that's served up perfectly in the best style of Mayfield's legendary Curtom Records! The Staples sound maybe even more righteous in the setting – with great grooves that are hip and funky at times, deeply soulful at others – arranged by Gil Askey and Rich Tufo in the same manner as Curtis' work from the time. Includes the hit title cut "Let's Do It Again", plus other nice ones like "After Sex", "Chase", "Big Mac", and "Funky Love".  © 1996-2024, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Sealed

This is what it says, that the record is still held fast in shrink-wrap. We tend to be pretty suspicious about these things, so if the shrink-wrap doesn't look original, or if the record seems to have undergone some damage over time, we'll probably take it out of the wrapper to ensure that it's in good shape — which is why we don't have more of these. In some cases the shrink-wrap may be torn in spots, but if it's not possible the record has been taken out and played, the record will still qualify as "Sealed".

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Curtis Mayfield

Heartbeat
Curtom/RSO, 1979. Very Good+
A real dancefloor set from Curtis – recorded with some sweet Philly production from the likes of Norman Harris and Bunny Sigler – in the sweeping, soaring, strings-heavy mode of the Philly disco records of the time! And yes, this isn't classic Curtis from the righteous years – ... LP, Vinyl record album

Curtis Mayfield & Linda Clifford

Right Combination
Curtom/RSO, 1980. Near Mint-
An album of duets that Curtis cut with rising disco star Linda Clifford – who by 1980 may well have been earning more money for Curtom than Curtis! The album's about half disco tracks, half soul duets in a Chicago mode – and arrangements are by Gil Askey and Norman Harris. Tracks ... LP, Vinyl record album
Curtom, 1972. Very Good+ Gatefold
Curtis Mayfield's lasting classic – and an album that the world will remember forever! Apart from being his hugely successful entry into the blacksploitation soundtrack field, this album's also a monster set of grooves that includes some of Curtis' funkiest work ever – a record that ... LP, Vinyl record album

Cameo

Secret Omen
Chocolate City, 1979. Very Good+
A sweet stunner from Cameo – a set that's got the group working with an even tighter, more on the money sound than before – yet never in a way that's too slick or commercial! These guys were one of the first to push the big ensemble funk sound into a leaner approach, and they really ... LP, Vinyl record album

Isaac Hayes

Shaft
Enterprise, 1971. Very Good+ 2LP Gatefold
A landmark album that hardly needs any introduction – as it's one of the most famous soundtracks, if not soul records, of the 70s! Isaac Hayes had already surprised music fans with the sophistication of his first few solo albums, which had been issued before this one – but with Shaft, ... LP, Vinyl record album

Brick

Good High
Bang, 1976. Very Good+
A killer debut from Brick – the start of a massive run at the end of the 70s, a time when the group was easily one of the biggest acts to come out of the up-and-coming Atlanta scene! Like some other Atlanta acts of the time, Brick had a way of fusing older funky soul on a tighter modern ... LP, Vinyl record album

Wilson Pickett

Best Of Wilson Pickett
Atlantic, Late 60s. Very Good+
Hard heavy soul from The Wicked Pickett – and virtually a blueprint for the heavier sound of Muscle Shoals to come – as Wilson Pickett was to that soul scene what Otis Redding had been to the Memphis world of Stax Records! These aren't Wilson's first recordings – but as with ... LP, Vinyl record album
Motown, Late 60s. Very Good+
Who would have thought it? Smokey's great career at Motown was just designed to be inspiration for a TV Special! Who cares, though? The set's still got some of his biggest hits for Motown, if you can get past the title – and tracks include "Mickey's Monkey", "Being With ... LP, Vinyl record album
Volt, 1965. Very Good+
Otis Redding Sings Soul – plenty of truth in that – but on this sweet little set, he somehow does it even better than before! The album's got a tightness that's totally great – but it's light years from the smoother soul of Motown, and still has plenty of the gritty Memphis edges ... LP, Vinyl record album
MGM, 1966. Very Good+
One of Hugh's more poppy efforts, but still a nice batch of instrumentals with a good Afro soul groove to them, and the jaunty trumpet sound that was Hugh's stock in trade at the time. Tracks include "Actin' Like A Fool", "If I Needed Someone", "Sounds Of Silence", ... LP, Vinyl record album

Pete Rugolo/Dusty Springfield

Sweet Ride
20th Century, 1968. Near Mint-
One of the grooviest records ever scored by Pete Rugolo – a mix of light 60s instrumentals that use organ, guitars, occasional voices, and an approach that's a bit like the best 60s work by Hugo Montenegro! This "wild trip into the world of the Now Generation" features both surf ... LP, Vinyl record album

Rascals

Peaceful World
Columbia, 1971. Very Good 2LP Gatefold
Nothing too peaceful here – at least not in a sleepy sort of way – as The Rascals are really hitting on all burners, and starting to mix a bit of funk in with their groove! The record's a great extension of the group's last work on Atlantic – and it takes that already-righteous ... LP, Vinyl record album
