Phase Two

LP (Item 15741) RCA, 1972 — Condition: Very Good
Probably Jimmy's second best album of the 70s – one with many of the same elements as his legendary It's Just Begun record. The band is grooving hard – with plenty of heavy conga, fuzzed out guitar, and trippy grooves that serve as a perfect foil for Jimmy's super-dope sense of humor. The record features a remake of Jimmy's earlier "Hey Leroy", still done with a Latiny groove, but also with many elements of "It's Just Begun" thrown into the funky mix. The album also features Jimmy's guitar-heavy "Tribute To Jim [Hendrix]", and "Luther The Anthropoid", which was a follow-up to "Troglodyte", with similar stoner caveman lyrics! Another tasty cut is "Party Life", a 7 minute Latin funk number with a very War-like groove!  © 1996-2024, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Very Good

  • Vinyl can have some dirt, but nothing major.
  • May not shine under light, but should still be pretty clean, and not too dirty.
  • May have a number of marks (5 to 10 at most), and obvious signs of play, but never a big cluster of them, or any major mark that would be very deep. Most marks should still not click under a fingernail.
  • May not look near perfect, but should play fairly well, with slight surface noise, and the occasional click in part of a song, but never throughout a whole song or more.
  • This is clearly a copy that was played by someone a number of times, but which could also be a good "play copy" for someone new.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

An overlooked gem from Diana Ross' 80s years – a record that's quite different than her Motown music of the 60s and 70s, but in a way that really shows the singer stepping out and trying something new! The album's maybe more soulful than some of Diana's previous albums – thanks to work ... LP, Vinyl record album

Pointer Sisters

Black & White
Planet/RCA, 1981. Near Mint-
A great step into the 80s for The Pointer Sisters – a record that has them bringing in themes that are a bit more soulful than some of their previous efforts! The album's still got all the big crossover potential of their other hits – but the groove's got a solidly soulful vibe overall ... LP, Vinyl record album

Evelyn Champagne King

Smooth Talk
RCA, 1977. Very Good-
Wonderfully smooth soul from Evelyn Champagne King – one of her real standouts from the early days, and a tremendous collaboration with producer/arranger T Life! Music Box
RCA, 1979. Very Good+
Niceness from Evelyn King to cap the end of the 70s! She's really in great form here – stepping out with some fully clubby backings, and working with the mighty T-Life, who's really got a great ear for her groove! The style's a bit less disco than previous albums – some simpler soul ... LP, Vinyl record album
RCA, 1975. Near Mint-
An excellent LP by one of the most underrecognized talents of 70's soul! DJ's deep soul voice is smooth and mellow, with the kind of honest heartbreaking quality that you find in the best work by Donny Hathaway and Stevie Wonder. This great LP's got DJ in a nice set of arrangements that have a ... LP, Vinyl record album

Art Of Defense
RCA, 1984. Very Good+
Nona Hendryx at the height of her 80s glory – looking mighty fierce in a fencing costume on the cover! RCA (Australia), 1976. Very Good Gatefold
One of the best albums ever from this hip Australian soul singer – a vocalist who was as important to her scene in the 70s as Chaka Khan was in the US! That comparison may seem like a strong one, but Renee Geyer's got a hell of a voice – and she really sounds wonderful here working in ... LP, Vinyl record album

Curtis Mayfield & Linda Clifford

Right Combination
Curtom/RSO, 1980. Near Mint-
An album of duets that Curtis cut with rising disco star Linda Clifford – who by 1980 may well have been earning more money for Curtom than Curtis! The album's about half disco tracks, half soul duets in a Chicago mode – and arrangements are by Gil Askey and Norman Harris. Tracks ... LP, Vinyl record album

Street Corner Symphony

Harmony Grits
Bang, 1975. Near Mint-
Funky uptempo vocal group soul – in that "doo wop for the clubs" kind of style that a some east coast acts were using at the time.
