Combo!

LP (Item 15642) RCA, 1961 — Condition: Near Mint-
A combo session with more than enough excitement to warrant the exclamation point in the title – one of Henry Mancini's jazziest records ever, and a date that's filled with some great west coast players! The sound here is a hip extrapolation of the Mancini groove heard on crime jazz soundtracks like Peter Gunn and Mr Lucky – but it's taken to slightly leaner territory here, with a nice focus on the solo talents of the group members. There's still 11 players in the group – so the combo isn't exactly small – but the spacious Mancini arrangements allow each player to step out nicely with a voice of their own. The lineup includes Pete Candoli on trumpet, Dick Nash on trombone, Ted Nash on alto and flute, Art Pepper on clarinet, Ronny Lang on baritone, Bob Bain on guitar, and Larry Bunker on vibes – and Johnny Williams plays both piano and harpsichord, the latter of which sounds plenty darn groovy! Titles include Cy Coleman's wonderful "Playboy's Theme", plus "Castle Rock", "Everybody Blow", "Far East Blues", "Powdered Wig", and "Moanin".  © 1996-2024, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Near Mint - (minus)

  • Black vinyl that may show a slight amount of dust or dirt.
  • Should still be very shiny under a light, even with slight amount of dust on surface.
  • One or two small marks that would make an otherwise near perfect record slightly less so. These marks cannot be too deep, and should only be surface marks that won't affect play, but might detract from the looks.
  • May have some flaws and discoloration in the vinyl, but only those that would be intrinsic to the pressing. These should disappear when the record is tilted under the light, and will only show up when looking straight at the record. (Buddah and ABC pressings from the 70's are a good example of this.)
  • May have some slight marks from aging of the paper sleeve on the vinyl.
  • Possible minor surface noise when played.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

A great little album of Latiny tunes from Henry Mancini – played by a very hip lineup of west coast jazzmen! The rhythms have a great mix of Latin influences and Mancini magic – the kind of grooves you'd hear on his 60s soundtracks at the time, played by a lineup that includes Bud ... One of the more string-heavy sessions in RCA's Stereo Action series, but still worthy of the dynamic style that made the Stereo Action titles some of RCA's best easy recordings from the 60s! Skin Tight
RCA, 1960. Very Good+
Pretty skin tight stuff – as Marty and crew play more bongos than you'd ever hear in a beatnik hoedown! The set's a very percussive one, and is one of Gold's better outings on RCA – thanks to the tightly stretched skins of the bongo. Gold arranged all tunes, and some of them are bongo- ...
