Swingin's Mutual

LP (Item 15618) Capitol, Mid 60s — Condition: Very Good+

An album of mixed vocal and instrumental cuts, some with Nancy in the lead, backed by Shearing's combo, others with Shearing's group alone. The vocal tracks are quite nice jazz ones – and include "On Green Dolphin Street", "Born To Be Blue", "All Night Long", and "Let's Live Again". Shearing's backing is pretty nice, and gives Nancy's style a really moody feel that's different than her pop work!  © 1996-2020, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(Rainbow label mono pressing. Cover has a cutout hole.)

Very Good + (plus)

  • Vinyl should be very clean, but can have less luster than near mint.
  • Should still shine under a light, but one or two marks may show up when tilted.
  • Can have a few small marks that may show up easily, but which do not affect play at all. Most marks of this quality will disappear when the record is tilted, and will not be felt with the back of a fingernail.
  • This is the kind of record that will play "near mint", but which will have some signs of use (although not major ones).
  • May have slight surface noise when played.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Four Freshmen

Voices In Modern
Capitol, 1955. Very Good+
Brilliant harmony vocals by the Four Freshman – an album with a title that perfectly sums up the Four Freshman contribution to 50s jazz, and their sublime way of re-casting vocals in their work! Most of the numbers on the set are familiar ones, but they're redone by the group with a ... LP, Vinyl record album

Dinah, Yes Indeed!
Capitol, 1959. Near Mint-
An overlooked swinger from Dinah Shore – one done for Capitol right at the end of the 50s, with some sublime arrangements by Nelson Riddle! Riddle brings a bounce to the record that Dinah doesn't always get – but without ever making the set gimmicky at all, as with some of her more ... LP, Vinyl record album

June Christy

Misty Miss Christy
Capitol, Mid 50s. Very Good
One of June's all-time classics – and perhaps her most famous album, next to the sublime Something Cool. The set, like that one, was arranged and conducted by Pete Rugolo – whose icy and modern touches are the perfect foil for June's sad and dark voice. Familiar tunes are completely ... Ann Richards/Stan Kenton

Two Much
Capitol, Mid 50s. Very Good
Ann's a more lustily voiced singer than the sort that usually worked with Stan Kenton during the 50s – with a deep range in her delivery of a song, and a mode of singing that's a bit more unbridled than you'd expect for someone working under Stan. This set's a lot more Ann's album than it is ... LP, Vinyl record album

Capitol, 1959. Very Good-
It's time to swing, but with a classy sound throughout – very much the best mix of modes Dakota Staton brought to her key early years at Capitol Records! Capitol, 1959. Very Good
A later Capitol gem by June – where she reprisies a number of classics from her early years with Stan Kenton – new versions of late 40s tunes, done here with Pete Rugolo arrangements that go a good way towards showing how both he and June had grown during the 50s.
