Classic Masters

LP (Item 1560) Capitol, 1984 — Condition: Near Mint-
The best of Ronnie Laws' 70s material, plus a few new tracks as well – an album that definitely lives up to its Classic Masters title! The music is awash in both jazz and soul modes – jazz, thanks to Ronnie's well-played solos, which soar out in an amazing blend of new ideas and on-the-money groove – and soul, with production that really helped Laws cross over to big audiences at the time – a blend that's like the best Blue Note jazz funk of the mid 70s! The new cuts include "City Girl" and "(You Are) Paradise" – and some of the classics include Wayne Henderson-produced gems, like "Friends and Strangers", "Saturday Evening", and the big big hit "Always There".  © 1996-2024, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Near Mint - (minus)

  • Black vinyl that may show a slight amount of dust or dirt.
  • Should still be very shiny under a light, even with slight amount of dust on surface.
  • One or two small marks that would make an otherwise near perfect record slightly less so. These marks cannot be too deep, and should only be surface marks that won't affect play, but might detract from the looks.
  • May have some flaws and discoloration in the vinyl, but only those that would be intrinsic to the pressing. These should disappear when the record is tilted under the light, and will only show up when looking straight at the record. (Buddah and ABC pressings from the 70's are a good example of this.)
  • May have some slight marks from aging of the paper sleeve on the vinyl.
  • Possible minor surface noise when played.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Ronnie Laws

Solid Ground
Liberty, 1981. Near Mint-
Sweetly soulful grooves from the great Ronnie Laws – and proof that even in his smoother years, Ronnie still had plenty of room for jazz in the mix! There's a fair bit more electric work on the set than before – especially in the keyboards, which bring lots of electro tones on mini-moog ... LP, Vinyl record album

Ronnie Laws

Fever
Blue Note, 1976. Very Good+
An album that's smoother than some of Ronnie's earlier work, and perhaps without the same dark edge – but still a nice batch of soulful fusion tunes, with production by Wayne Henderson, in his classic 70s At-Home Productions mode! By that, we mean that a number of the tracks have a good ... LP, Vinyl record album

Billy Taylor

Midnight Piano
Capitol, 1964. Very Good-
A really great album from Billy Taylor – way fresher than most of his other records of the time, especially his trio work! The main reason for this is Oliver Nelson – who crafts some incredibly soulful backings for Billy on the album's tracks, twisting through soul jazz big band ... LP, Vinyl record album
Capitol, Late 40s/Early 50s. Very Good
Genius, pure genius! If you've ever wondered why folks think Stan is so great, check out this landmark set of postwar modern swing tunes – some of the most groundbreaking work of its generation, and proof that there was still a lot of room to grow within the big band format. Stan Kenton

Contemporary Concepts
Capitol, 1955. Near Mint-
Contemporary concepts that are as bold today as they were when first released in the mid 50s! Stan's at the height of his powers here – working with the brilliant Bill Holman to craft some incredible versions of tunes that had become jazz standards, tired ones at that – but which ... Capitol, 1954. Near Mint-
One of the first albums ever cut as a leader by trombonist Frank Rosolino – a hip set issued under the Stan Kenton Presents banner for Capitol in the mid 50s – but done in a smaller combo mode than you'd hear with Stan! The setting provides a great showcase for the emerging solo ... LP, Vinyl record album
Capitol, 1954. Near Mint-
Easily one of the best of the Kenton Presents series on Capitol – and one of the few albums to ever focus on the genius talents of saxophonist Boots Mussulli! We'd put Boots in the same camp as Charlie Mariano in the 50s – on one hand a clear modernist, with a crisp and fresh tone, and ... LP, Vinyl record album

Cannonball Adderley with Nancy Wilson & Lou Rawls

Together (aka In Person)
Capitol/Tall Tree, 1968. Near Mint-
Almost everything soulful at Capitol Records in the mid 60s – packed together in one sweet little place! Jeremy Steig

Energy
Capitol, Early 70s. Very Good+
Excellent funky jazz from Jeremy Steig – the funkiest flute player we can think of! Charlie Shavers

Excitement Unlimited
Capitol, 1963. Near Mint-
These sides feature Charlie Shavers working with an octet that includes Billy Byers, Jerome Richardson, Budd Johnson, and George Barnes. Capitol, 1974. Very Good+
A stone classic from Supersax – a record with plenty of classic bop elements, despite a very 70s-styled group name and cover! The combo's a large one, and features tight horn formation deftly cutting through a host of bop classics – lots of ensemble passages at the start, then breakout ... LP, Vinyl record album

Jack McDuff

Honeydripper
Prestige, 1961. Very Good+
One of the records that put a young Brother Jack McDuff on the map – and a perfect example of the rougher R&B roots that first emerged in his early work on the Hammond! The session's got a much more down-n-dirty feel than some of McDuff's tighter 60s quartet work – and offers a ... LP, Vinyl record album
