Jazz Workshop Revisited

LP (Item 15601) Riverside, Early 60s — Condition: Very Good+
Also available
Cannonball Adderley — Jazz Workshop Revisited ... CD 5.99

A great live classic from the Cannonball Adderley Sextet of the early 60s – that famous group that included Nat Adderley on cornet, Yusef Lateef on tenor and flute, Joe Zawinul on piano, Sam Jones on bass, and Louis Hayes on drums! Tracks are long, and these guys are really on fire in a live setting – and titles include a stellar 11 minute version of "The Jive Samba", one of Cannonball's greatest tracks – plus "Primitivo", "Lillie", and "Mellow Buno".  © 1996-2020, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(Blue label Bill Grauer Productions Inc pressing, with microphone logo and deep groove. Cover has light wear.)

Very Good + (plus)

  • Vinyl should be very clean, but can have less luster than near mint.
  • Should still shine under a light, but one or two marks may show up when tilted.
  • Can have a few small marks that may show up easily, but which do not affect play at all. Most marks of this quality will disappear when the record is tilted, and will not be felt with the back of a fingernail.
  • This is the kind of record that will play "near mint", but which will have some signs of use (although not major ones).
  • May have slight surface noise when played.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Cannonball Enroute
Mercury, Late 50s. Very Good
Cannonball Adderley's enroute to a great jazz legacy here – stepping out in a groove that begins to show some of the soul jazz modes he was forging at the end of the 50s – a great change from the straighter bop styles of his early years! Price You Got To Pay To Be Free
Capitol, 1970. Very Good 2LP Gatefold
Fantastic work from the massive electric years of the Cannonball Adderley Quintet – one of the group's last records to feature the keyboards of Joe Zawinul – and also one of the heaviest from the time! Lush Side Of Cannonball
EmArcy, Late 50s. Very Good
A wonderfully mellow set of ballads recorded by Cannonball, with orchestral backings by Richard Hayman. The album's typical of the kind of "all over the map" approach that Mercury used during Cannon's early years – before he'd settled down into the one-man soul jazz factory he ... Cannonball Adderley

Inside Straight
Fantasy, 1973. Near Mint- Gatefold
One of Cannonball Adderley's late funky sessions for Fantasy – and a record that still features some mighty heavy production from David Axelrod! The album's got that core groove that Axe and Cannon first crafted together at Capitol in the 60s – but the sound here has some definite 70s ... LP, Vinyl record album

Cannonball Adderley

Julian Cannonball Adderley
EmArcy, Mid 50s. Very Good+
Very early work from Cannonball Adderley – recorded way before the funky years, when he was a hard-wailing soulful soloist with a lot of bop in his style! Cannon's paired here with brother Nat, a good companion even at this early stage – and the two of them solo in front of a large ... LP, Vinyl record album

Phenix
Fantasy, 1975. Very Good+ 2LP Gatefold
Sweet funky 70s work from Cannonball Adderley – a record that has him revisiting older tunes from his early soul jazz years – but in ways that give them a whole new electric vibe overall! Soul Zodiac
Capitol, 1972. Very Good 2LP Gatefold
One of the coolest, baddest, funkiest albums Cannonball Adderley ever recorded – a massive suite of tunes based on the signs of the Zodiac, produced to perfection by David Axelrod, and featuring some hip recitations from the mighty Rick Holmes! The double-length set is completely compelling ... LP, Vinyl record album

Sam Jones

Chant
Riverside, 1961. Very Good
Early genius from Sam Jones – the kind of record that showed the world that he was way more than just a bass player – even though he was pretty darn great at that! At the time of the set, Sam was already raising plenty of ears with his work in the Cannonball Adderley group, an outfit ... LP, Vinyl record album
Riverside, 1957. Very Good-
A great early date as a leader from trumpeter Clark Terry – one cut during the stretch when he was keeping company with players like Thelonious Monk and Johnny Griffin! The latter player is a key member of Terry's group here – as Johnny's tenor adds a nice sharp edge to Clark's trumpet ... LP, Vinyl record album

Freedom Suite
Riverside, 1958. Sealed
A crucially important record in Sonny Rollins' career – one that had him breaking out of the straight bop sound, and emerging as a major power on the tenor sax – one with limitless creative power! Wes Montgomery Trio

Portrait Of Wes
Riverside, Early 60s. Very Good+
Early work by Wes – cut with his early trio that included the wonderful Melvin Rhyne on organ! The sound is tight and freer than some of Wes' later recordings – a bit more in the pocket, too, showing the roots of the Indianapolis scene from which Wes was just emerging at the time. ... Blues For Tomorrow
Riverside, Late 50s. Near Mint-
Kind of a hodge-podge from different sessions – but a nice little record, and one that's come to stand on its own over the years, thanks to the strength of the work!
