Cannonball Adderley — Jazz Workshop Revisited ... CD 4.99

Classic funky soul jazz playing by Cannonball and one of his great groups, caught live in San Francisco, with a nice hard groove that you don't always get in their studio recordings. The record includes a stellar 11 minute version of "The Jive Samba", one of Cannonball's greatest track, plus "Primitivo", "Lillie", and "Mellow Buno". Nat Adderley's on trumpet, Joe Zawinul's on piano, and Yusef Lateef is on tenor! (Blue label Bill Grauer pressing. Cover has some wear & a split spine.)  © 1996-2017, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Very Good - (minus)

  • Vinyl may be dirty, and can lack a fair amount of luster.
  • Vinyl can have a number of marks, either in clusters or smaller amounts, but deeper.
  • This is the kind of record that you'd buy to play, but not because it looked that great. Still, the flaws should be mostly cosmetic, with nothing too deep that would ruin the overall record.
  • Examples include a record that has been kept for a while in a cover without the paper sleeve, or heavily played by a previous owner and has some marks across the surface. The record should play okay, though probably with surface noise.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Milestone, 1962/1963. Very Good
Rare work by Cannonball – recorded in the early 60s, but not issued until after his death! Riverside, 1962. Very Good
Rock-solid live material from the classic Cannonball Adderley Sextet – a combo who could usually groove even better on a concert date then they could in the studio! The album's one of a number of key live sides from Cannon in the 60s – and although it pre-dates his work on Capitol, it's ... LP, Vinyl record album
Cannonball Adderley Volume 1
Dobre, Early 70s. Sealed
An undated Cannonball Adderley live set – but most likely from the early 70s, given that the group features electric keyboards by Mike Wolf, bass by Walter Booker, and drums by Roy McCurdy. The album has the group opening up a lot more than on Cannon's live sets for Capitol – playing ... LP, Vinyl record album
Cannonball's Sharpshooters
Mercury, 1958. Very Good-
A set that's right on target, right from the start – and one that has the young Cannonball Adderley really coming into his groove! The set's a lot more soul jazz-oriented than some of Cannon's records from a few years before – played by a rock-solid group that includes brother Nat ... LP, Vinyl record album
Pyramid
Fantasy, 1974. Very Good
One of Cannonball Adderley's excellent moody electric albums from the early 70s – with a stripped down vibe that's really nice, made even better by sweeeet production by David Axelrod! The set's got great keyboard work by George Duke and Hal Galper – both working in a spare, subtle ... LP, Vinyl record album
Jump For Joy
Mercury, 1958. Very Good-
An interesting early side by Cannonball that captures him before he'd really found his voice – and when the folks at Mercury still didn't really know what to do with him. The record's a tightly arranged set of tracks from Duke Ellington's musical "Jump For Joy" – with ... LP, Vinyl record album
Soul Zodiac
Capitol, 1972. Very Good 2LP Gatefold
One of the coolest, baddest, funkiest albums Cannonball Adderley ever recorded – a massive suite of tunes based on the signs of the Zodiac, produced to perfection by David Axelrod, and featuring some hip recitations from the mighty Rick Holmes! The double-length set is completely compelling ... LP, Vinyl record album
Somethin' Else
Blue Note, 1958. Very Good
A landmark album – even if it was the only session that Cannonball Adderley ever cut for Blue Note! Riverside, 1959. Very Good-
One of the greatest Cannonball Adderley albums from the Riverside years – a completely smoking live date recorded in San Francisco, often with long tracks that really let the group open up and do their thing! The lineup here is that classic one that first grabbed attention – the group ... LP, Vinyl record album
Capitol, Late 60s. Very Good+
A great lost chapter in the Cannonball/David Axelrod story! The record features Cannon's classic quintet performing some longer, more serious works with orchestral backing – and the sound is vaguely similar to some of Axelrod's "high concept" work for Capitol. The record features ... LP, Vinyl record album
Blue Spring
Riverside, 1959. Very Good
A pretty warm and lyrical set by Kenny – accompanied here by a larger group that includes Cecil Payne, David Amram, and Cannonball Adderley on horns, plus a young Cedar Walton on piano. Dorham wrote 4 of the album's tracks, and they provide a perfect showcase for his polished trumpet style. ... LP, Vinyl record album

Thelonious Monk plays the music of Duke Ellington – but as you can imagine, the sound here is quite different than usual!
