A masterpiece of harmony soul – one of THE all-time greats of the genre, and a lasting treasure from The Stylistics! Excellent work from this smooth Chicago vocal group! The album may well be the best the group ever recorded – and it features some stellar ballad work produced with a nice spacey tone, almost in a Rose Royce mellow mode – by Jerry Butler's Fountain Productions team and by Clarence ... One of two albums produced by Rudy Ray Moore – the other being The Sensuous Black Man – which define the art of making love from a gender-based perspective. Like Rudy's Sensuous Black Man, The Madam's version features one side of "instructional" dialogue – very XXX-rated ... LP, Vinyl record album
Beautiful righteousness from poet Nikki Giovanni – a wonderfully put together session that features her reading her own poetry over musical backings, plus some added choral bits from the New York Community Choir! The sound is completely right on – never too over the top, and never too ... LP, Vinyl record album
A great little album from Jeannie Reynolds – and her lasting contribution to underground soul! Jeannie's vocals are nice and deep – with hints of southern diva phrasing, filtered through some of the tighter soul styles coming out of Chicago and other points north at the time! Detroit ... Really tremendous work from Mandrill – an instant funky classic, and a set that has the group furthering the sublime sound they crafted on their seminal Composite Truth! The record has all these wonderful twists and turns – not just the usual 70s funky styles, but inflections from a ... LP, Vinyl record album
The title says "blues", but there's lots of nice funky material on here, and a number of tracks with a good hard groove. Harold Jones handles the vocals, and he's backed up by a group of whiteys who seem to have a bluesy rock background. Cuts include "Come On And Get It", ... LP, Vinyl record album
A wonderful 70s live album from Marvin Gaye – a set that was as expansive, ambitious, and sophisticated as his studio work from the time! The album's put together almost like a 3-sided portrait of Marvin – in that it begins with a long section of current work, moves into a "fossil ... LP, Vinyl record album
An album of The Dells that has them moving away from their baroque soul recordings in the Chicago studios with Charles Stepney, and moving towards a sound that's both a little more rootsy (with production by Don Davis in both Muscle Shoals and Detroit), and a little more smooth (with arrangements ... LP, Vinyl record album
Al Green explores your mind – then moves onto your heart, your soul, and everything in between! The album's a classic in the best Hi Records tradition – and features Al moving into a style that's even more spiritual than before – serving up the sublime tracks "Take Me To The ... A gem of a record from Chico Hamilton – maybe our favorite album ever from the legendary drummer! The set's a fantastic bit of nuttiness, with Chico leading a tight group with Steven Potts on alto and Russell Andrews on tenor, both playing hard over a subdued background of four trombones ...
