Blues With A Touch Of Elegance

LP (Item 15574) Capitol, Mid 60s — Condition: Very Good
Arranger Onzy Matthews plays piano and leads a nice tight band that includes LA soul jazz players like Curtis Amy, Clifford Scott, Bobby Bryant, Ray Crawford, and Horace Tapscott! The title sums up the sound of the session perfectly, as the tracks are bluesy, but with an elegant sense of arrangement, as you might expect from a jazz release on Capitol at the time. The solos of the stars are fairly prominent, and the LP's better than you might expect. Titles include "Pensive", "Dallas Blues", "Blues Non Stop", and "Somethin's Cookin".  © 1996-2023, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Very Good

  • Vinyl can have some dirt, but nothing major.
  • May not shine under light, but should still be pretty clean, and not too dirty.
  • May have a number of marks (5 to 10 at most), and obvious signs of play, but never a big cluster of them, or any major mark that would be very deep. Most marks should still not click under a fingernail.
  • May not look near perfect, but should play fairly well, with slight surface noise, and the occasional click in part of a song, but never throughout a whole song or more.
  • This is clearly a copy that was played by someone a number of times, but which could also be a good "play copy" for someone new.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

George Shearing

Satin Brass
Capitol, 1958. Near Mint-
A perfect title for this lovely little gem from George Shearing – a set that mixes his familiar piano, vibes, and guitar with some bigger brass arrangements – yet all in a way that still shimmers with the sheen of satin! Shearing was smooth before anyone else could lay claim to the ... LP, Vinyl record album

Blue Chiffon
Capitol, 1958. Near Mint-
A record that's as dreamy as you'd expect from the title – and note that we said dreamy, and not sleepy – despite the horizontal stature of the model on the front! George Shearing's music always oddly excites us – it's gentle, sure – but there's always all these subtle ... LP, Vinyl record album

A great little record – with some very groovy guitar! This is the kind of session that we used to pass up years ago because we never thought it was that pure. Stan Kenton

Stage Door Swings
Capitol, 1958. Very Good
A genius set from Stan Kenton – seductively simple, but featuring some great arrangements from Lennie Niehaus! One of the first albums ever cut as a leader by trombonist Frank Rosolino – a hip set issued under the Stan Kenton Presents banner for Capitol in the mid 50s – but done in a smaller combo mode than you'd hear with Stan! Slow Freight
Cadet, 1966. Very Good+
A killer album by soul jazz pianist Ray Bryant! The title track, "Slow Freight", is an amazing 10 minute groover that moves at a very slow pace (just like a freight train), and which features some very cool ad-lib talking by Paul Serrano – a pretty groovy touch that really adds a ...
