A key link between Joe Henderson's earlier years at Blue Note and his later, freer work for Milestone – recorded in a style that's got plenty of Blue Note hardbop touches, yet also done with a sense of freedom that you'd never expect from that label! Joe's grooving in a straight, yet angular mode – working with a sextet that include Mike Lawrence on trumpet, Grachan Moncur III on trombone, Kenny Barron on piano, Ron Carter on bass, and Louis Hayes on drums – all in a mix of soulful, exotic, and slight Latin styles – a sound that's clearly influenced by the work of Horace Silver at times, but carried off beautifully by Joe in a bold, young tenor voice. Titles include the classic "Mamacit", plus "Mo Joe", "O Amor Em Paz", "The Kicker", "If", and "Nardis". (Dark green label pressing.)  © 1996-2015, Dusty Groove, Inc.

We realize that there are many different interpretations of the standard grades used for pre-owned vinyl record albums & CD, so we thought we'd offer you the ones that we are working with, so you have an idea what we mean when we give the grade for a non-new item on our pages.

Used Vinyl Grades

Below are stated conditions for a used vinyl records at Dusty Groove. Grading for the cover should be assumed to be near (within a "+" or "-") the grading for the vinyl. If there is significant divergence from the condition of the vinyl, or specific flaws, these will be noted in the comments section of the item. However, please be aware that since the emphasis of this site is towards the music listener, our main concern is with the vinyl of any used item we sell. Additionally, please note that all of our records are graded visually; considering the volume of used vinyl we handle, it is impossible for us to listen to each record. If we spot any significant flaws, we make every attempt to listen through them and note how they play.

The following grading conditions apply to the vinyl component of an album or single:

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Amazing stuff! Soulful Rebel
Milestone, 1971. Very Good+
A lost early 70s set from vibesman Johnny Lytle – totally funky, but in a way that's very different than his famous 60s work! The album's got a sweet electric groove that comes not only from Johnny's vibes, but also from the sweet Hammond and Fender Rhodes of Billy Nunn, and the smoking ... LP, Vinyl record album

Chet Baker & Crew
Pacific Jazz, 1956. Very Good-
Killer work from the late 50's by Chet! Although Baker's trumpet playing in the early part of the decade became known as one of the trademark "cool" sounds of the west coast, he started to move towards a sound that was a lot more hardbop at the end of the decade – as you'll hear on ... A trio of spiritual out players that features Glenn Howell on bass, voice, and percussion; Roland Young on reeds and percussion; and Aisha Kahil on vocals.
