Slide/Son Of Slide

7-inch (Item 15252) Cotillion, 1977 — Condition: Used

7-inch, Vinyl record

Great stuff from Slave! "Slide" is a monster – tight electric funk, nicely compressed so that it's not too silly, which is why Tribe Called Quest snagged it early for a key sample! "Son Of Slide" is every bit as great – and in fact, the single's probably got the two best tracks by the band on one piece of wax! (In an Atlantic Group sleeve. Label has a small sticker.)  © 1996-2017, Dusty Groove, Inc.

We realize that there are many different interpretations of the standard grades used for pre-owned vinyl record albums & CD, so we thought we'd offer you the ones that we are working with, so you have an idea what we mean when we give the grade for a non-new item on our pages.

Used Vinyl Grades

Below are stated conditions for a used vinyl records at Dusty Groove. Grading for the cover should be assumed to be near (within a "+" or "-") the grading for the vinyl. If there is significant divergence from the condition of the vinyl, or specific flaws, these will be noted in the comments section of the item. However, please be aware that since the emphasis of this site is towards the music listener, our main concern is with the vinyl of any used item we sell. Additionally, please note that all of our records are graded visually; considering the volume of used vinyl we handle, it is impossible for us to listen to each record. If we spot any significant flaws, we make every attempt to listen through them and note how they play.

The following grading conditions apply to the vinyl component of an album or single:

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Horse/Love Is All Right
Phil-LA Of Soul, Late 60s. Very Good
A classic! "The Horse" is a great 60s instrumental groover that virtually set the tone for the next 10 years of brass instrumentation in soul music! The cut's got a raw TSU Tornadoes or Bar-Kays kind of feel, with a horn line right up front, in a catchy rolling groove that never quits! 7-inch, Vinyl record

Cotillion, Early 70s. Very Good
Lost material from Otis Clay! Both tracks take Otis way way south from Chicago – as "I'm Qualified" features production by Rick Hall, and "Is It Over" features work by Willie Mitchell. Both tracks are stronger than Otis later work, and are great transitional cuts from ... 7-inch, Vinyl record
Disco To Go/When You're Gone
Atlantic, 1978. Near Mint-
The title says "disco", but the track is prime P-Funk all the way! Lots of nice bass work at the bottom, and a trio of female vocals keeping things real over the top – and really getting the most out of George Clinton's funky hook! 7-inch, Vinyl record
Valley Of The Dolls/8th Wonder
Atco, Late 60s. Near Mint-
Forget the a-side, which is a dreamy instrumental, because the b-side's the real winner! "8th Wonder" is a nice groovy instrumental – with some hard drums at the beginning, and with King playing varitone in a nice mod fuzzed out style! 7-inch, Vinyl record
King, Late 50s. Very Good+ (pic cover)
A nice little set from Bill – tenor and organ grooving together in smaller combo style than usual, with more jazz than you might find on some of his other records, and some awfully nice solo work – with that fantastic Doggett tone! This is a 4 track cardboard pic sleeve version of the ... 7-inch, Vinyl record
Columbia, 1959. Very Good+ (pic cover)
A beautiful jazzy score by Ellington – and a fitting companion to this classic Otto Preminger film! The record captures Ellington at a perfect moment – right during his Indigos period of increased sophistication, when his band was at an all-time level of perfection. Bringing Up The Guitar/Gittin A Little Hipper
King, Late 60s. Very Good-
One of the all-time James Brown classics! Hard wailing guitar riffs, popping off at popcorn speed! Searing sax solo by Pee Wee Ellis! Slammin' hard drum beats! What more could you ask for? Both cuts are great – and this is about as funky as you could get for late 60s JB! 7-inch, Vinyl record

Ace (UK), 1950s/1960s/1970s. Sealed 7 x 7 inch set
A beautiful package – done in celebration of 40 years of wonderful music from Ace Records – and a great reminder of why we love them so much! The set is book-style – similar to the Motown Singles CD sets, or a vintage 78rpm album – and it includes lots of text and notes on ... 7-inch, Vinyl record
