Cherry

LP (Item 1522) CTI, 1972 — Condition: Very Good
Gatefold
Also available
Stanley Turrentine — Cherry (Japanese pressing) ... CD 18.99
One of the best CTI albums from the early 70s – and one of Stanley Turrentine's funkiest records as well! The album's got a sharper edge than most other Turrentine albums of the time – a quality that goes beyond Stan's already soulful approach to the tenor, and which brings in some tight changes and more pronounced rhythms that really give the best cuts a great groove! The group's a sextet – with Bob James on electric piano, Milt Jackson on vibes, Cornell Dupree on guitar, Ron Carter on bass, and Billy Cobham on drums – and titles include a monster version of Weldon Irvine's "Sister Sanctified" – a great funk tune that's probably best known as the sample for "My Philosophy" by BDP! Other tracks include "Speedball", "Cherry", and "The Revs".  © 1996-2024, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(Original pressing with Van Gelder stamp. The inner gatefold and labels have name in pen, marker, and ink stamps.)

Very Good

  • Vinyl can have some dirt, but nothing major.
  • May not shine under light, but should still be pretty clean, and not too dirty.
  • May have a number of marks (5 to 10 at most), and obvious signs of play, but never a big cluster of them, or any major mark that would be very deep. Most marks should still not click under a fingernail.
  • May not look near perfect, but should play fairly well, with slight surface noise, and the occasional click in part of a song, but never throughout a whole song or more.
  • This is clearly a copy that was played by someone a number of times, but which could also be a good "play copy" for someone new.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Betcha
Elektra, 1979. Very Good+
Stanley Turrentine's blowing here amidst some soaring arrangements from Gene Page – set in a smoothly soulful territory that draws on all of Page's great work on the LA scene of the 70s, but which still keeps the voice of Stanley very upfront in the mix. There's a bit less of the Turrentine ... LP, Vinyl record album

Everybody Come On Out
Fantasy, 1976. Near Mint- Gatefold
Sweet, smooth, and soulful – a heck of a great album from Stanley Turrentine, and one that's recorded in a mode that steps off nicely from his best work at CTI! A 70s soulful classic from the mighty Stanley Turrentine! Stanley Turrentine's a hell of a soloist in a large ensemble setting – and there's possibly no better place to hear that talent at work than on this classic 60s date for Blue Note! Stanley Turrentine meets Bob James – on a record that's one of the 70s classics on CTI! In The Pocket
Fantasy, 1975. Very Good+ Gatefold
Although this should be a "sell out" album for Stan – because it's got his tenor set amidst some sweeping larger arrangements – it's actually still a pretty dope little LP, and one that shows Turrentine's capacity for hitting a nice groove in kind of a soundtrack-y funk vein. ...
