Last Of The Big Plungers

LP (Item 15204) Argo, 1959 — Condition: Near Mint-
Basie-esque stuff by Al Grey, who made his name playing trombone in Basie's band. The group includes a lot of other Basie-ites, including Billy Mitchell, Joe Newman, and Benny Powell. The great Floyd Morris (one of Chicago's best talents of the time!) plays piano, and titles include "Bluish Grey", "The Elder", "Kenie-Konie", and "How Come You Do Me Like You Do".  © 1996-2024, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Near Mint - (minus)

  • Black vinyl that may show a slight amount of dust or dirt.
  • Should still be very shiny under a light, even with slight amount of dust on surface.
  • One or two small marks that would make an otherwise near perfect record slightly less so. These marks cannot be too deep, and should only be surface marks that won't affect play, but might detract from the looks.
  • May have some flaws and discoloration in the vinyl, but only those that would be intrinsic to the pressing. These should disappear when the record is tilted under the light, and will only show up when looking straight at the record. (Buddah and ABC pressings from the 70's are a good example of this.)
  • May have some slight marks from aging of the paper sleeve on the vinyl.
  • Possible minor surface noise when played.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Baby Face Willette

Behind The 8 Ball
Argo, 1964. Near Mint-
Classic hard-hitting organ jazz session by this great Chicago keyboard player, better known to the world for his two Blue Note LPs, but playing here in a style that's much more creative, and much more open-ended than on those LPs. He's got a tight trio here, with Ben White on guitar and Jerry ... LP, Vinyl record album

Ramsey Lewis

In Crowd
Argo, 1965. Very Good+
One of the biggest jazz albums of the 60s – and a crucial crossover set from the legendary Ramsey Lewis trio! The record's a live one, which gives the group a perfect chance to show off their special genius – not just soulful grooves from Ramsey on piano, but wickedly sharp and playful ... Zoot Sims

Zoot (Argo)
Argo, 1956. Good
An obscure session for Zoot Sims – but a nice one! The group's a quartet – with Johnny Williams on piano, Gus Johnson on drums, and Knobby Totah on bass – and Zoot's blowing in an unfettered setting that reminds us a bit of Sonny Stitt in similar settings at the same time! ... Art Farmer

Perception
Argo, 1961. Near Mint-
An amazingly beautiful set of tracks from Art Farmer – playing here with superb accompaniment from a young Harold Mabern on piano, in a laidback quartet format that really lets Art open up! Art's playing is fresh and creative throughout – never too over the top, and always blown with ... LP, Vinyl record album

Chubby Jackson

Chubby's Back
Argo, 1957. Near Mint-
With a name like Chubby, the set ought to be a snoozer – but it swings nicely, thanks to some strong bass work by Jackson! The group's a Chicago ensemble, featuring lesser-known players of the 50s – like Vito Price, Cy Touff, Don Lamond, and Jimmy Gourley – plus trombone by Bill ... LP, Vinyl record album

Argo, 1958. Very Good+
Ramsey and the trio are on the front in tuxedoes, top hats, and tails – but the overall sound of the record is much more in keeping with their soul jazz grooves of the late 50s – not necessarily gentlemanly, but with a worldly appreciation for a variety of styles of music, and perhaps a ... James Moody

Great Day
Argo, 1963. Very Good
Way more than just a James Moody album – a true proof of his genius in the 60s! The album was put together under the guidance of Tom McIntosh – a very hip young writer and arranger that Moody had been pushing on other records, and who steps into the limelight here with a wonderful set ... Chester Thompson

Powerhouse
Black Jazz, 1971. Near Mint-
One of the few solo albums ever cut by organist Chester Thompson – a player who's known to most as the keyboardist in Tower Of Power, but one who's also remembered by a select funky few for this killer record for the Black Jazz label! The album's a stripped-down quartet session – with ... LP, Vinyl record album

Miles Davis

Live Evil
Columbia, 1971. Near Mint- 2LP Gatefold
A beautiful live representation of the energy of the Bitches Brew years – one that has Miles Davis and the group really letting loose with free-flowing, modally-inspired lines – cooking up an incredible blend of acoustic and electric sounds at once! There's a bit of funk here, but not ... LP, Vinyl record album

Gene Krupa & Buddy Rich

Original Drum Battle
Verve, 1952. Very Good+
A pretty darn great album – with a wonderful mix of JATP swing and strong-handed drumming by the leaders. The material was recorded at a Jazz At The Philharmonic show at Carnegie Hall in 1952, and although the main focus appears to be Krupa and Rich's drum work, there's actually some ... MPS, 1969. Sealed Gatefold
A wonderful album from guitarist Jim Hall – different than some of his other work, and with a slightly harder edge! The unique session has him playing in an MPS 60s mode – more straight-on than some of his more airy moments – with a sound and tone that still recalls his work with ... LP, Vinyl record album
