Somethin' Else

LP (Item 15192) Blue Note, 1958 — Condition: Good
Also available
Cannonball Adderley — Somethin' Else (with bonus track) ... CD 4.99

A landmark album – even if it was the only session that Cannonball Adderley ever cut for Blue Note! The album was recorded at a time when Adderley was working with Miles Davis – and as such, the session features a group that includes Miles, blowing in a cool tone that's a perfect offset to Cannonball's more soulful style. The rest of the group includes Hank Jones, Sam Jones, and Art Blakey – and like John Coltrane's Blue Train, the record's more of an "special session" than the usual Blue Note album, but the strength of the players make it one of the more memorable records of its day! Titles include "Somethin' Else", "One For Daddy-O", and a nice moody take on "Dancing In The Dark". (Liberty stereo pressing with RVG Stereo stamps. Cover has a Stereo sticker, ring & edge wear, taped seams, and some stains on back.)  © 1996-2018, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Good

  • A record that you'd buy to play, cheap, but which you wouldn't buy for collecting.
  • Will have marks across all parts of the playing surface, and will most likely play with surface noise throughout. May have some other significant flaws, such as residue, or a track that skips.
  • In most cases, a poor quality copy of a very difficult to find record.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Savoy/BYG (France), 1955. Very Good
One of Cannonball Adderley's first albums – recorded for Savoy way back in 1955, and done with a free and open style that's a nice contrast to his tighter sides for Mercury! The album's very relaxed – that hardbop blowing session mode that Savoy virtually pioneered – letting the ... LP, Vinyl record album
EmArcy, 1956. Very Good-
The title's a bit of a mouthful, but a good description of the way Cannonball was presented in the years before his soul jazz groove firmly kicked in! The "hi fi" is a bit overstated – as the album's pretty much of a straight jazz record, featuring Cannon blowing lead solos in a ... LP, Vinyl record album
Riverside, 1962. Very Good
Rock-solid live material from the classic Cannonball Adderley Sextet – a combo who could usually groove even better on a concert date then they could in the studio! The album's one of a number of key live sides from Cannon in the 60s – and although it pre-dates his work on Capitol, it's ... LP, Vinyl record album
Music You All
Capitol, 1971. Near Mint-
Killer work from the same sessions that gave the world Cannonball Adderley's classic Black Messiah album – live material from an extended stretch as the Troubadour club in LA – featuring a very righteous, freewheeling version of Cannonball's group! The lineup features some wonderful ... LP, Vinyl record album
Capitol, Mid 60s. Near Mint-
Once again, Cannon proves that it's not the song, it's the singer! This set of tunes from the hit musical Fiddler On The Roof should be schmaltzy – but thanks to the quality of the group (a great sextet with Nat Adderley, Charles Lloyd, Joe Zawinul, Sam Jones, and Louis Hayes), and thanks to ... Planet Earth
Riverside/ABC, Early 60s/1969. Near Mint-
Excellent early 60s work by Cannonball Adderley – retitled here for release in the late 60s, but with a rock-solid soul jazz sound all the way through! The album features Cannon's sextet with Yusef Lateef and Joe Zawinul – and they're playing a number of Lateef compositions that have ... LP, Vinyl record album
Phenix
Fantasy, 1975. Very Good 2LP Gatefold
Sweet funky 70s work from Cannonball Adderley – a record that has him revisiting older tunes from his early soul jazz years – but in ways that give them a whole new electric vibe overall! The album's actually Cannonball's last full studio set, but it's also one of his greatest too ... LP, Vinyl record album
Soul Zodiac
Capitol, 1972. Very Good- 2LP Gatefold
One of the coolest, baddest, funkiest albums Cannonball Adderley ever recorded – a massive suite of tunes based on the signs of the Zodiac, produced to perfection by David Axelrod, and featuring some hip recitations from the mighty Rick Holmes! The double-length set is completely compelling ... LP, Vinyl record album
Capitol, Late 60s. Near Mint-
A great lost chapter in the Cannonball/David Axelrod story! The record features Cannon's classic quintet performing some longer, more serious works with orchestral backing – and the sound is vaguely similar to some of Axelrod's "high concept" work for Capitol. The record features ... LP, Vinyl record album
Them Dirty Blues
Riverside, 1960. Very Good
One of the all-time great ones by Cannonball! This record captures him in the prime of his early soul jazz fame – working with an unbelievably heavy quintet that featured Bobby Timmons on piano (with Barry Harris sitting in on a few tracks), Sam Jones on bass, Louis Hayes on drums, and ... Cooker
Blue Note, 1957. Near Mint-
A very appropriate title for a very cooking little album – one of Lee Morgan's first efforts as a leader, cut back during his first years of late 50s fame! The style here is a bit less Morgan-esque than some of Lee's later 60s classics – but the record is rock-solid throughout, and ... LP, Vinyl record album
Plain Talk
Blue Note, Early 60s. Near Mint-
A very nice groover from Jimmy – and a session that was recorded earlier, but not issued by Blue Note until the end of the 60s. The format is hard-wailing sextet – with Blue Mitchell on trumpet, Ike Quebec on tenor, and Jackie McLean on alto. Jimmy's usual trio at the time holds the ... LP, Vinyl record album
