Somethin' Else

LP (Item 15192) Blue Note, 1958 — Condition: Fair

A landmark album – even if it was the only session that Cannonball Adderley ever cut for Blue Note! The album was recorded at a time when Adderley was working with Miles Davis – and as such, the session features a group that includes Miles, blowing in a cool tone that's a perfect offset to Cannonball's more soulful style. The rest of the group includes Hank Jones, Sam Jones, and Art Blakey – and like John Coltrane's Blue Train, the record's more of an "special session" than the usual Blue Note album, but the strength of the players make it one of the more memorable records of its day! Titles include "Somethin' Else", "One For Daddy-O", and a nice moody take on "Dancing In The Dark".  © 1996-2020, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(Mono 63rd Street pressing with RVG stamp, "ear", and deep groove. NOTE: Vinyl is in FAIR condition. Cover has some wear and aging.)

Fair

This is a grade we rarely use, as we try not to sell records in very bad condition, though in some rare cases we will list a record in such bad shape that it does not conform to the standards above. A "Fair" record will have enough marks or significant flaws that it does not even qualify as "Good", but is a copy you might consider for playing, if you're willing to put up with noise and/or flaws. An example might be a recording with surface noise so heavy that it is equal to the volume of the music. For records listed as "Fair", we will describe the extent of the condition in the comments.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Cannonball Adderley Live!
Capitol, 1964. Very Good
Cannonball Adderley with David Axelrod production – a combination that couldn't miss back in the 60s! In keeping with the success of the Mercy Mercy Mercy album done with Axelrod, Capitol did everything they could to catch Cannonball in a live setting – a great move, given the open, ... Capitol, Late 60s. Very Good+
A great lost chapter in the Cannonball/David Axelrod story! The record features Cannon's classic quintet performing some longer, more serious works with orchestral backing – and the sound is vaguely similar to some of Axelrod's "high concept" work for Capitol. The record features ... LP, Vinyl record album

Lou Donaldson

Lush Life
Blue Note, 1967. Sealed
An unusual session from the heart of Lou Donaldson's return to Blue Note in the late 60s – a mellower date that stands in strong contrast to his funkier albums of the time! As you might guess from the title, there's a lusher feel going on here – one that has Lou's alto sax augmented by ... LP, Vinyl record album
Blue Note, 1960. Very Good+

Blue Note, 1953. Very Good+
Bud's second LP for Blue Note – a firey batch of trio tracks that feature George Duvivier on bass and Art Taylor on drums – some of Powell's best work from the time, and a nearly all-classic set of bop piano tracks! Jackie McLean

Tippin' The Scales
Blue Note, 1962/1984. Near Mint-
A sweet little quartet from Jackie McLean – a later entry into his bop-level sets for Blue Note, recorded right before his "new thing" years! The album never got a proper release back in the 60s, and only first saw the light of day two decades later – but it's a real cooker ... LP, Vinyl record album

Tony Williams

Spring
Blue Note, 1965. Very Good
Startling! This album is one of two that a young Tony Williams cut for Blue Note, back when he was just hitting the age of 20, and when he was already blowing the minds of masters like Jackie McLean (who first hired him) and Miles Davis (who stole him from Jackie for his own group!) with an ... Blue Note, 1960/1980. Very Good+
A killer from Lou Donaldson's early hardbop years at Blue Note – recorded right during his classic run of albums for the label, but not issued until many years later! There's a sweet bounce to most tracks here – the kind of vibe that Lou had most famously on his Blues Walk album – ... LP, Vinyl record album

Donald Byrd

Chant
Blue Note, 1961. Near Mint-
A Donald Byrd treasure – and an album that was almost left in the vaults by Blue Note, until they briefly released it at the end of the 70s! The cover and title are a bit unfamiliar, but the music is right up there with Byrd's classic sessions with baritonist Pepper Adams – a great ... LP, Vinyl record album
Blue Note, 1975. Very Good-
An essential bit of jazz funk from Donald Byrd and Larry Mizell! The groove's very similar to their classic Places & Spaces LP, and the record's got loads of cool spacey tracks with hot funky trumpet from Donald, and cool waves of synth and sound from Larry. The title cut's a great groover, ... LP, Vinyl record album
