Stomp Off Let's Go

LP (Item 15185) Flying Dutchman, 1976 — Condition: Near Mint-
An unusual late record from the legendary Sonny Stitt – a set that's got some electricity in the group, but at a level that's not entirely funky jazz! Instead, the tracks are long, and feature some well-crafted solos from the leader – and the vibe here is loose at times, a bit like the more obscure recordings that Sonny did for the Jazz Masters label in Detroit! Richard Davis handles electric bass at the bottom, alongside drums from Louis Bellson and guitar from Bucky Pizzarelli – and the group also features trumpet work from Jon Faddis and Lew Soloff. There's a nice flow here – a relaxed soul jazz vibe that fits the sound of Stitt very well – and the album features four long tracks – "Duke's Place", "Perdido", "Little Suede Shoes", and a nice version of "Samba De Orpheo", with tight snapping drums.  © 1996-2024, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Near Mint - (minus)

  • Black vinyl that may show a slight amount of dust or dirt.
  • Should still be very shiny under a light, even with slight amount of dust on surface.
  • One or two small marks that would make an otherwise near perfect record slightly less so. These marks cannot be too deep, and should only be surface marks that won't affect play, but might detract from the looks.
  • May have some flaws and discoloration in the vinyl, but only those that would be intrinsic to the pressing. These should disappear when the record is tilted under the light, and will only show up when looking straight at the record. (Buddah and ABC pressings from the 70's are a good example of this.)
  • May have some slight marks from aging of the paper sleeve on the vinyl.
  • Possible minor surface noise when played.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Verve, Late 1950s. Very Good+
Stitt's Verve recordings were some of his best, and they show the genius of his playing in a relaxed easy setting that lets him get the most out of his solos. Brand New Bag
Jazz Masters, Late 70s. Very Good+
One of the best Stitt sessions from the 70's, and a sweet batch of electric tracks with Eddie Russ on the piano. In a way, this is his best album on the Jazz Master label – better than the Tornado album, which seems to show up more. It's got a very nice version of "We've Only Just ... LP, Vinyl record album
Roost, Mid 50s. Near Mint-
Beautiful Roost material from Sonny Stitt – solid, mature, and extremely well-placed lines on the alto sax – all caught at a level that's higher than most of his contemporaries were dising out at the time! Impulse, 1963. Very Good Gatefold
A tight swinger from Sonny Stitt – one of the standout 60s dates he recorded for the Impulse label, a place where he seemed to get even more care and focus in the studio! Prestige, 1964. Very Good+
Sonny Stitt's grooving nicely here with organist Don Patterson – at a level that's similar to some of the records that Patterson cut with Booker Ervin – just organ, tenor, and a bit of drums –a very a very stripped down, very laid back set of tracks that has a focus on free ... Roost, 1956. Very Good
The title might sound a bit clinical, but the music within is anything but – and instead is that sort of special, magical work that always makes Sonny Stitt a real cut above most of his contemporaries! My Mother's Eyes
Pacific Jazz, 1963. Near Mint-
A rare one for Sonny Stitt – an album for Pacific Jazz recorded on the west coast, but done with some hard-burning organ work by Charles Kynard that easily matches any of Stitt's best soul jazz sides from the east! There's a tightly cooking feel to the entire set that's really great – ... LP, Vinyl record album
