Cornbread

LP (Item 15062) Blue Note, 1965 — Condition: Near Mint-
Also available
Lee Morgan — Cornbread (180 gram pressing) ... LP 26.99

A rock-solid sextet session from the mighty Lee Morgan – recorded for Blue Note at the height of his mid 60s powers, and carried off in a beautiful blend of soul jazz and some slight modern touches! The group here is top-shelf all the way through – Jackie McLean on alto, Hank Mobley on tenor, Herbie Hancock on piano, Larry Ridley on bass, and Billy Higgins on drums – the last two of whom do a great job of bringing some complex yet swinging rhythms to the set! The horn soloists are all as sharp as you might expect – and the album's a striking soulful date from McLean at a time when he was mostly going out a bit more. Titles include the funky "Cornbread", the searching "Our Man Higgins", and the lyrical ballad "Ceora" – plus "Most Like Lee" and "Ill Wind".  © 1996-2019, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(Recent reissue on UME.)

Near Mint - (minus)

  • Black vinyl that may show a slight amount of dust or dirt.
  • Should still be very shiny under a light, even with slight amount of dust on surface.
  • One or two small marks that would make an otherwise near perfect record slightly less so. These marks cannot be too deep, and should only be surface marks that won't affect play, but might detract from the looks.
  • May have some flaws and discoloration in the vinyl, but only those that would be intrinsic to the pressing. These should disappear when the record is tilted under the light, and will only show up when looking straight at the record. (Buddah and ABC pressings from the 70's are a good example of this.)
  • May have some slight marks from aging of the paper sleeve on the vinyl.
  • Possible minor surface noise when played.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Brilliant work throughout – the last studio album ever cut by Lee Morgan, and a mindblowing session that always leaves us wondering how massive he would have become if he hadn't been tragically murdered shortly after it was recorded! The album's a huge change from Morgan's already-great work ... LP, Vinyl record album

Excellent 70's issue of a number of tracks recorded by Horace Silver in the late 50's – including some (then) unissued material, and alternate versions of popular tracks, recorded with different bands than on the hit. A great Blue Note 2-fer from the 70s – one that features the first issue of the album Here To Stay, plus the classic Hub Cap! Blue Note, 1975. Near Mint-
A beautiful later Blue Note album from vibist Bobby Hutcherson – a set recorded after his famous association with Harold Land, but with a groove that's wonderfully soulful in a whole different way! Wayne Shorter

Odyssey Of Iska
Blue Note, 1970. Near Mint-
A very unusual album for Wayne Shorter – recorded right around that 1970 point when Duke Pearson was exploring formats for Blue Note artists that included larger, often electric arrangements, pointing the way towards some of the later 70s soul jazz work on labels like Kudu or CTI! This set, ... LP, Vinyl record album
Blue Note, 1956. Very Good
Jimmy Smith heard in the kind of setting that spawned him – playing live at Delaware's Club Baby Grand – just the sort of smoky little jazz room that initially fostered his talents! The liveness of the set brings a really nice edge to the album – a sound that's grittier than some ... LP, Vinyl record album
Dot, 1968. Near Mint-
A crazy album of funky tracks from Lalo Schifrin – very different than most of his other jazz and bossa work! Point Of Departure
Impulse, 1963. Near Mint- Gatefold
A great record – and one that's filled with so many wonderful little moments! Sweet 60s grooves from Shirley Scott – really working the Hammond organ here with a wonderful sound – that warm, lean, soulful groove she hit perfectly at Impulse Records! CTI, 1972. Near Mint- Gatefold
A killer set from Freddie Hubbard's legendary years on CTI!
