One of the most open-ended 70s albums from the great Ahmad Jamal – a live performance that features two side-long tracks that really show Jamal getting into the spirit of the Impulse Records scene of the time! In addition to these wonderful, long-spun lines on acoustic piano – really opened up in the company of bassist Jamil Sulieman Nasser and drummer Frank Gant – the record also features Ahmad playing Fender Rhodes on one track too – soloing in both acoustic and electric modes on the title, and showing two different sides of his genius in the process. Titles include "Bogota" and "Extensions".  © 1996-2017, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Very Good + (plus)

  • Vinyl should be very clean, but can have less luster than near mint.
  • Should still shine under a light, but one or two marks may show up when tilted.
  • Can have a few small marks that may show up easily, but which do not affect play at all. Most marks of this quality will disappear when the record is tilted, and will not be felt with the back of a fingernail.
  • This is the kind of record that will play "near mint", but which will have some signs of use (although not major ones).
  • May have slight surface noise when played.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Impulse/Analogue Productions, 1962. Near Mint- 2LP Gatefold (reissue)
One of John Coltrane's best early albums for Impulse – a warm set of modally grooving tracks, and one that picks up where My Favorite Things left off! The group here features McCoy Tyner on piano, Jimmy Garrison on bass, and Elvin Jones on drums – a really magical rhythm section that ... LP, Vinyl record album
Ascension (Version 1)
Impulse, 1965. Very Good Gatefold
This is the rare first take of Ascension, and it differs greatly from the second take, which is the more widely available one. It's designated by the fact that the recording doesn't say "Version II" on the runoff groove. One of the freest, most exploratory albums ever recorded by ... LP, Vinyl record album
Impressions
Impulse, 1963. Very Good+ Gatefold
Brilliant work – John Coltrane really opening up in his new spiritual mode of the 60s, hinting at the changes to come, while still keeping the modal groove of previous recordings! The record features tracks from a few different sessions from the years 1961 to 1963, but it holds together ... LP, Vinyl record album
Salt & Pepper
Impulse, 1963. Very Good+ Gatefold
Head to head blowing from Sonny Sitt and Paul Gonsalves – just the kind of twin-horn performance that Stitt was famous for in his live battle days, and one that also reminds us that Gonsalves can be a very loose swinger when he wants to be! The tracks are all long, and played with the sort ... LP, Vinyl record album
Impulse, 1963. Very Good+ Gatefold
The title says it all – as McCoy works his way through a nicely restrained trio set of material that features bass by Steve Davis and drums by Lex Humphries. The tracks are perhaps not as spiritual and far-reaching as Tyner's later work – but they're handled with that richly expressive ... LP, Vinyl record album
El Chico
Impulse, 1965. Very Good+ Gatefold
Amazing, simply amazing – and light years ahead of the staid sounds that Chico Hamilton was cutting in the 50s! Hamilton's one of those players who has an amazing range to his music – almost all of it really incredible, as Chico always shifts things up over time – continually ... LP, Vinyl record album
Hues
Impulse, 1975. Near Mint- Gatefold
A nice change from some of Sam Rivers' more extended modes of the time – with tracks that are a bit shorter, with a bit more focus – yet still a relatively loose approach overall! The album features a few differeing trios – with Rivers on flute, tenor, soprano sax, and piano ... LP, Vinyl record album
Impulse, 1964. Very Good+ Gatefold
A great little album – a lot better than you might think from the concept! After the death of JFK, Oliver Nelson penned this extremely strong tribute to the man – featuring snippets of speeches made by Kennedy during his time in office as president, used as bridges between jazz based ... Impulse, 1966. Very Good Gatefold
One of the greatest albums ever from trombonist Roswell Rudd – an early Impulse Records session, cut right at a time when Rudd was a crucial part of the New York "new thing" scene in the 60s! The album's almost more of an ESP session from its lineup – which includes Giuseppi ... LP, Vinyl record album

A sweet 60s session from the team of Shirley Scott and Clark Terry – musicians who never played together regularly, but who really work wonders on this unique record! Impulse, 1962. Good Gatefold
A perennial favorite in the John Coltrane catalog – a beautiful set of standards, handled in a warm laidback style – one that shows that Trane's groundbreaking group with Jimmy Garrison on bass, Elvin Jones on drums, and McCoy Tyner on piano could still express themselves with even more ... Statements
Impulse, Early 60s. Very Good Gatefold
A great statement from vibist Milt Jackson – one of his key solo sessions in a great 60s run of recordings away from the Modern Jazz Quartet! Like the classics that followed this one, the vibe is much more soulful than any of Milt's records with the MJQ – kind of an extension of the ... LP, Vinyl record album
