Tropical Heatwave

LP (Item 1493) Hi Fi, Late 50s — Condition: Near Mint-

A Tropical Heat Wave from the Rene Paulo Group – actually a very cool record by an obscure little combo featuring a guitar/piano/bass/drums lineup – with a sound that's a mix of tight jazz and exotic lounge. We don't know much about them, but they groove very nicely on all the tracks on this set, with some warmly cooking numbers nicely described by the album title, and also some nicely paired down and laidback groovers, too! The set includes a number of Irving Berlin compositions, but they manage to get a lot more out of them than most groups – and the titles include "Reaching For The Moon (Bossa Nova)", "Soft Lights & Sweet Music", "Rhapsody", "How Deep Is The Ocean", "Alexander's Rag Time Band" and "I Never Had a Chance".  © 1996-2020, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(Mono pressing with deep groove. Cover has light wear.)

Near Mint - (minus)

  • Black vinyl that may show a slight amount of dust or dirt.
  • Should still be very shiny under a light, even with slight amount of dust on surface.
  • One or two small marks that would make an otherwise near perfect record slightly less so. These marks cannot be too deep, and should only be surface marks that won't affect play, but might detract from the looks.
  • May have some flaws and discoloration in the vinyl, but only those that would be intrinsic to the pressing. These should disappear when the record is tilted under the light, and will only show up when looking straight at the record. (Buddah and ABC pressings from the 70's are a good example of this.)
  • May have some slight marks from aging of the paper sleeve on the vinyl.
  • Possible minor surface noise when played.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Arthur Lyman

Legend Of Pele
Hi Fi, 1957. Near Mint-
One of the best albums ever recorded by Arthur Lyman – cut shortly after he departed Martin Denny's group, with a very similar exotica style. Lyman's vibes are nice and spooky, ringing out in the echoey setting of the album – which was Henry Kaiser's incredible Aluminum Dome in ... LP, Vinyl record album

Stanley Black

Exotic Percussion
London, Mid 60s. Near Mint- Gatefold
Both Phase 4 and Stanley Black have made their share of snoozy LPs, but this is not one of them! The label lists the talent as "Stanley Black with Women's Voices", and boy do those gals give his music a kick. Their spooky chorus haunts these exotic ditties, and ally Stanley's sound much ... Floyd Cramer

Class Of 66
RCA, 1966. Sealed
A set that mixes the tinkling piano of Cramer with some larger, fuller backings from Bill McElhiney – all recorded in RCA's Nashville studios, but with a sound that's very cosmopolitan, save for the occasional honky tonk twinge in Floyd's phrasing. Best Of Martin Denny
Liberty, Late 50s/Early 60s. Very Good+
Not really "the best", but a pretty nice collection of Denny's early work for Liberty – with a groovy photo on the back that shows him working with the group in action, beating on a big conga, while the rest of the band plays exotic percussion! San Fernando Brass

New Brass Sound Of The Hits
Capitol, Early 70s. Near Mint-
Very sweet grooves – a set of mellow early 70s easy tunes, performed by a brass ensemble with nice electric bass backing! Tender Touch
Capitol, Late 50s. Very Good+
Although best-remember for his more swinging arrangements, Nelson Riddle could certainly have the tender touch when he wanted too – and this classic Capitol session is a great example of his talents on the dreamier side of the musical spectrum!
