Cannonball Adderley Quintet — Cannonball Adderley Quintet Plus ... CD 5.99

An all-star set from Cannonball Adderley – a hip standout in his pre-Capitol years for Riverside! The "plus" in the title is pianist Wynton Kelly – who works with the group wonderfully on 4 of the album's 6 tracks – bringing in a slightly different feel on the keys than you might get from some of Cannon's other albums – slightly lyrical at points, in a really great way. Rhythm is from the rock-solid team of Sam Jones on bass and Louis Hayes on drums – and of course Nat Adderley's also in the group on cornet, and Victor Feldman rounds out the ensemble on vibes, but also plays piano on the tracks that don't feature Kelly. There's a strong undercurrent of Adderley's Riverside soul jazz vibe on the set – and titles include "Arriving Soon", "New Delhi", "Winetone", "Well You Needn't", "Star Eyes", and "Lisa".  © 1996-2019, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(Black label stereo Bill Grauer pressing with microphone logo. Cover has some edge wear.)

Very Good + (plus)

  • Vinyl should be very clean, but can have less luster than near mint.
  • Should still shine under a light, but one or two marks may show up when tilted.
  • Can have a few small marks that may show up easily, but which do not affect play at all. Most marks of this quality will disappear when the record is tilted, and will not be felt with the back of a fingernail.
  • This is the kind of record that will play "near mint", but which will have some signs of use (although not major ones).
  • May have slight surface noise when played.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Happy People
Capitol, 1972. Very Good+
A really unique little album from Cannonball's all-great late years at Capitol – a session that features some strong influences from Brazilian music – "The Happy People" – and production from the legendary David Axelrod! The mix makes for a really unique little record ... LP, Vinyl record album

Gigi Gryce & The Jazz Lab Quintet

Gigi Gryce & The Jazz Lab Quintet
Riverside, 1957. Sealed
Hard to find Riverside LP of this group led by Gigi Gryce running down nice hard bop numbers. There's no dry academic performances here, not that you'd guess that from the line-up, but the title kind of leads you in that direction. Donald Byrd and Gryce are playing nice and hard up front, with ... LP, Vinyl record album

Art Blakey

Caravan
Riverside, 1962. Near Mint-
One of the best non-Blue Note sessions from Art Blakey in the 60s – a really searing set that features the sextet lineup of the Jazz Messengers – a group that's filled with legends who include Freddie Hubbard on trumpet, Wayne Shorter on tenor, Curtis Fuller on trombone, Reggie Workman ... Jean Thielemans (Toots Thielemans)

Man Bites Harmonica
Riverside, 1957. Sealed
One of the first American albums from Belgian guitarist and harmonica player Toots Thielemans – a sharp-edged session that brings a new level of jazz into his work! The title's hokey, but the sound is totally great – with Toots on both harmonica and guitar, usually more of the former ... LP, Vinyl record album
Riverside, 1960. Near Mint-
They're not kidding with the title of this one – because although the record was only Wes Montgomery's second album as a leader, he was already making plenty of waves with the sound of his guitar! Cannonball Adderley

Portrait Of Cannonball
Riverside, 1958. Very Good-
A jazzy portrait of Cannonball Adderley in his early soul jazz prime – oddly one that doesn't feature his regular quintet lineup, but which more than makes up for that lack with a batch of players that includes Blue Mitchell on trumpet, Bill Evans on piano, Sam Jones on bass, and Philly Joe ... One of those ubiquitous Milestone 70s two-fers combining two nice sides from the little giant. Cannonball Adderley

Things Are Getting Better
Riverside, 1958. Very Good
An album that definitely lives up to its title – given the great change and evolution in the style of Cannonball Adderley's music – definitely pointed towards the soul jazz fame to come in the 60s! The group here has Adderley's alto in the company of some all-stars who may not be his ... LP, Vinyl record album
Columbia, 1961. Very Good
Legendary early live work from Miles Davis – one of the first examples on record of the way that Davis could really stretch out in a concert setting!
