❔

This is a massively overlooked album! Not only is it a great late-sixties take on Exotica, but it's also got some funky grooves and nice jazzy soloing, ala Sound Gallery or Sound Spectrum material. It's almost like the Chicharrones album, by the Latin Gents, if you know that one – and tracks include "Moon Of Manakoora", "Baia", "Misirlou", and "Tico Tico". Very nice!  © 1996-2020, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(Cover has light wear and aging.)

Near Mint - (minus)

  • Black vinyl that may show a slight amount of dust or dirt.
  • Should still be very shiny under a light, even with slight amount of dust on surface.
  • One or two small marks that would make an otherwise near perfect record slightly less so. These marks cannot be too deep, and should only be surface marks that won't affect play, but might detract from the looks.
  • May have some flaws and discoloration in the vinyl, but only those that would be intrinsic to the pressing. These should disappear when the record is tilted under the light, and will only show up when looking straight at the record. (Buddah and ABC pressings from the 70's are a good example of this.)
  • May have some slight marks from aging of the paper sleeve on the vinyl.
  • Possible minor surface noise when played.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

United Artists, Mid 60s. Very Good
Groovy guitarist Al lays down a tasty set of 60s spy and cop themes – all with a Leroy Holmes production style that's similar to other pop soundtrack work on United Artists. The album features the original cut "The Bronze Doll", plus groovy theme music like "The Eye In Flat ... LP, Vinyl record album

Rene Paulo

Tropical Heatwave
Hi Fi, Late 50s. Near Mint-
A Tropical Heat Wave from the Rene Paulo Group – actually a very cool record by an obscure little combo featuring a guitar/piano/bass/drums lineup – with a sound that's a mix of tight jazz and exotic lounge. We don't know much about them, but they groove very nicely on all the tracks ... LP, Vinyl record album
Capitol, Late 60s. Near Mint-
A very groovy album by Laurindo Almeida – one of his best bossa cookers in a swinging 60s mode! The album features lots of great acoustic guitar from Laurindo, but spun over fuller arrangements by Lex De Azvedo, Clare Fischer, and Dick Grove – all of whom get that right sort of jaunty, ... Henry Mancini

Mancini Touch
RCA, 1959. Near Mint-
Delightful instrumentals – not as jazzy as Mancini's regular soundtrack work, but still pretty nice! The tracks are more in an easy instrumental vein – but given Hank's style, they're still pretty cool, especially as they feature work by west coast jazzmen like Shelly Manne, Victor ... Copper Plated Integrated Circuit

Plugged In Pop
Command, 1969. Very Good Gatefold
Very cool moog album with a Perry-Kingsley feel. That is, it's got sort of a sharp electronic sound, but with grooviness underneath that keeps the whole thing going along at a jaunty pace. At times, the electronic sounds will break down into a bunch of noise, and then jump into a swingin' poppy ... LP, Vinyl record album

In the years before he hit big with Exotica, Les Baxter had a minor chart instrumental with "The Poor People Of Paris", a dreamy romantic tune that was typical of the lush style he used in his earlier years. Baroque Inevitable
Columbia, 1966. Very Good
One of our favorite entries into the strange 60s genre of baroque pop – arranged and produced with very hip touches from the great John Simon! Many of the numbers here are familiar 60s pop tunes – but they're redone in an instrumental way using electric harpsichord, woodwinds, and some ... LP, Vinyl record album

Chuck Brown & The Soul Searchers

Bustin' Loose
Source, 1979. Very Good
Chuck Brown and his Soul Searchers group are past the arch jazzy funk of their days on Sussex Records – and they're heading more towards that ensemble sound that would drive the DC Go Go scene in the early 80s. The formula is heard to best effect on the big hit "Bustin Loose", an ... LP, Vinyl record album

Keem-O-Sabe
United Artists, Late 60s. Very Good
A goofy mix of groovy instrumental tracks with a weird "Apache"-esque instrumentation made up of some nicely processed guitars.
