I Lead A Life

LP (Item 14695) Blue Thumb, 1972 — Condition: Very Good
Gatefold

Wonderful early work from Ben Sidran! The album's got a hip jazzy vocal style – similar to some of the best late 60s work by Bob Dorough or Dave Frishberg, but also with New Orleans touches – as in the work of Mose Allison or Dr John! Sidran brings in a smoother, groovier feel than those artists, though – and really helps out his vocals with some great work on electric piano too! The instrumentation's got a tripped-out California feel – often quite open-ended, and really rumbling around for different influences from jazz, funk, and soul – almost like some of Shuggie Otis' best work of the time, or like some of Ben's contemporaries on the Blue Thumb label. Titles include the great instrumental "Lust" – plus "Eliyahu", "When A Woman Says She's Ready", "Talking About Money", "I Lead A Life", "Slippery Hip", and "Chances Are".  © 1996-2020, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Very Good

  • Vinyl can have some dirt, but nothing major.
  • May not shine under light, but should still be pretty clean, and not too dirty.
  • May have a number of marks (5 to 10 at most), and obvious signs of play, but never a big cluster of them, or any major mark that would be very deep. Most marks should still not click under a fingernail.
  • May not look near perfect, but should play fairly well, with slight surface noise, and the occasional click in part of a song, but never throughout a whole song or more.
  • This is clearly a copy that was played by someone a number of times, but which could also be a good "play copy" for someone new.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Frank Sinatra

This Is Sinatra!
Capitol, Early 50s. Very Good
This Is Sinatra indeed – a wonderful collection of singles, and a near-lost album to the shifting sands of time! The record wasn't one of Frank's "album concepts" for Capitol, and has since been dismantled in the catalog – but for many in the 50s, this was one of THE Sinatra ... LP, Vinyl record album

Julie London

Julie
Liberty, 1958. Very Good
One of the greatest early albums by Julie London – a record that features sublime jazz backings from the Jimmy Rowles Orchestra, in a mode that gets way past the "breathy girl with subtle guitar" sound of her first few for Liberty! Rowles' backings bring in some really nice horn ... LP, Vinyl record album
Flying Dutchman, 1973. Very Good Gatefold
A tasty compilation of Leon Thomas' work for the Flying Dutchman label – work that's clearly his best over the years, and which retains the original style of spiritual soul jazz that he pioneered with Pharoah Sanders. Flying Dutchman, 1969. Very Good+ Gatefold
Wonderful work from Leon Thomas – easily one of his greatest albums ever, and a set that was recorded at the same time he was working with Pharoah Sanders! Claudine Longet

Colours
A&M, Late 60s. Very Good
The colors are rich, but gentle too – like a palette of pastels, all sung by the lovely Claudine Longet! The album's got a slightly more mature feel than some of Longet's first for A&M – great Nick DeCaro arrangements that show some of the deeper elements creeping into pop at the ... Billie Holiday

Billie Holiday (MGM)
MGM, 1959. Very Good
One of Billie's last sessions – recorded with beautiful large backings by Ray Ellis, and a heartbreaking tone that may not show Billie as strong technically as on some of her earlier albums, but which is pretty darn compelling nonetheless. Nina Simone

Folksy Nina
Colpix, 1964. Very Good+
Nina's folsky, but she's also jazzy too – and the album's from a key time in which she was finding a very special way to bring the two modes together! Simone could have been a straight jazz singer if she wanted – but as records like this always remind us, she was always striving for ... LP, Vinyl record album
Columbia, Late 50s. Near Mint-
Dreamy harmony jazz from the great Hi-Los – one of the hippest groups of the 50s, with a sweet quartet approach similar to The Four Freshmen, and which had a huge effect on pop in the 60s! Only The Lonely
Capitol, 1958. Very Good+
