Burt Bacharach (1971)

LP (Item 14576) A&M, 1971 — Condition: Very Good+
Gatefold

Insanely wonderful work by Bacharach – in a way that we can hardly begin to describe (but we'll certainly try!) By the time this one was recorded – 1971 – Burt's reputation as a songwriter and arranger were so firmly established that he had an incredible amount of freedom in the studio. Here, working with tunes that were mostly well-worn, plus a new one or two – Burt comes up with an amazingly complex set of arrangements, opening up his tunes like little flowers, focusing on a particular instrumental tendril, and drawing it out into incredible lines of melody and color. Proof of this is the album's extended version of "Wives & Lovers", or its suite for orchestra, entitled "And The People Were With Her". All tracks are great – from Burt's intimate vocal on "Hasbrook Heights", to the jangly instrumentation of "Freefall", to the completely recast versions of hits like "One Less Bell To Answer", "April Fools", and "Mexican Divorce".  © 1996-2021, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Very Good + (plus)

  • Vinyl should be very clean, but can have less luster than near mint.
  • Should still shine under a light, but one or two marks may show up when tilted.
  • Can have a few small marks that may show up easily, but which do not affect play at all. Most marks of this quality will disappear when the record is tilted, and will not be felt with the back of a fingernail.
  • This is the kind of record that will play "near mint", but which will have some signs of use (although not major ones).
  • May have slight surface noise when played.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Reach Out
A&M, 1967. Very Good+
Fantastic! We love Burt Bacharach in so many ways that it's easy to forget the genius of these early A&M sides – but going back to them is always a treat, and it's wonderful to hear the way that Burt lays down his own work when given the chance! You know the tracks – "House ... LP, Vinyl record album

Herb Alpert & The Tijuana Brass

Beat Of The Brass
A&M, 1968. Near Mint- Gatefold
Beautifully compressed pop from Herb Alpert – a session that's still got the traditional Tijuana Brass style, but which also displays a more restrained, more adult approach to instrumental pop! The rhythms are nicely changed out more than before here – stretching out with interwoven ... LP, Vinyl record album

Juliette Greco

Complainte Amoureuse
Philips (France), Late 60s. Very Good
Nice late 60's session by Juliette Greco, featuring the sexy French singer backed by two different orchestras – those of Alain Goraguer and Francois Rauber. The LP's got a nice mix of material, including a lot of songs we've never heard of, and which seem to be exclusive to this LP. Tracks ... LP, Vinyl record album

Another one of their crazy LPs, which are sometimes hard to find amidst the pop stuff they normally did. This one's got them doing some originals and some standards, augmented by a tight little ensemble of three percussionists and one bassist. The added instruments drive their piano stuff – ... Happy Moog
Pickwick, Late 60s. Very Good+
Man, this moog sure is happy! And who wouldn't be? The groovy lil' instrument's got some excellent backings here – all spare, rhythmic, and filled with cool electronic effects. The overall level of the electronics is more sophisticated than Perry-Kingsley, but in the end the sound is ... LP, Vinyl record album

RCA, 1971. Near Mint-
Key transitional work from Hugo – a record that has some of the groovy touches of his late 60s work, and some of the moogy touches of his 70s period!
