Imagination – Yasushi Sawada In New York

LP (Item 143274) Victor (Japan), 1979 — Condition: Near Mint-
Originally: 19.99
Japanese singer Yasushi Sawada is actually in New Jersey, not New York – working at the legendary studio of Rudy Van Gelder, with a hip group that features Hank Jones on piano, Ron Carter on bass, Grady Tate on drums, and Remo Palmier on guitar – the last of whom arranged the music!  © 1996-2023, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(Japanese pressing, with insert.)

Near Mint - (minus)

  • Black vinyl that may show a slight amount of dust or dirt.
  • Should still be very shiny under a light, even with slight amount of dust on surface.
  • One or two small marks that would make an otherwise near perfect record slightly less so. These marks cannot be too deep, and should only be surface marks that won't affect play, but might detract from the looks.
  • May have some flaws and discoloration in the vinyl, but only those that would be intrinsic to the pressing. These should disappear when the record is tilted under the light, and will only show up when looking straight at the record. (Buddah and ABC pressings from the 70's are a good example of this.)
  • May have some slight marks from aging of the paper sleeve on the vinyl.
  • Possible minor surface noise when played.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Mari Nakamoto

Something Blue
Victor (Japan), 1980. Near Mint-
Beautifully sensitive vocal work from Japanese singer Mari Nakamoto – recording here with hip small combo backing that includes alto and flute from Frank Strozier, keyboards from Barry Miles, piano from Harold Mabern, guitar from Joe Beck, and drums from Louis Hayes! LP, Vinyl record album
Verve, 1960. Near Mint-
Mel Torme takes on the sound of Broadway at the start of the 60s – but he does so in a very groovy way, thanks to hip backings from the amazing Marty Paich! The style here is as swinging and jazzy as the work that Mel and Marty cut together on the Bethlehem label in the late 50s – and ... LP, Vinyl record album
Verve, Late 50s. Near Mint-
An excellent album of vocals by the great Joe Williams! Joe's always been a fine singer, but with Basie, he really gets the backing he needs to do his work the best. And although this album isn't as authenico as it might be, it still comes from a time when Verve really knew how to handle singers ... LP, Vinyl record album
Columbia, Early 60s. Near Mint-
A later repackaging of the excellent Flying High album – easily the group's best album by far, and unfortunately, too often the toughest one to find! The arrangements here are fantastic, and the material is waaaaaay more hip than the Ellington and Basie stuff that they wasted too much time ... LP, Vinyl record album

Joe Williams & Lambert, Hendricks & Ross

Sing Along With Basie
Roulette, 1958. Near Mint-
One of the more obscure albums by Lambert, Hendricks, and Ross – a session of Basie tunes, performed with backing by the Count, plus additional lead vocals by Joe Williams, the voice most closely associated with the Basie group at the time! The style is similar to the trio's Sing A Song Of ... LP, Vinyl record album

Bing Crosby

Seasons

Bing Crosby's final album, accompanied by Peter Moore Orchestra. LP, Vinyl record album
Capitol, Early 60s. Very Good
A rare Stan Kenton session with a vocalist – one that features the little-known Jean Turner, a really great singer with a mix of soul and jazz that's a lot like Nancy Wilson! Kenton's a bit looser and more swinging here than usual – almost in an Oliver Nelson mode at times to match the ... LP, Vinyl record album

Helen Merrill & John Lewis

Helen Merrill/John Lewis (aka Django)
Mercury, 1976/1977. Near Mint-
A wonderfully moody album from singer Helen Merrill – recorded with backing by pianist John Lewis, in an overall feel that's got some of the styles that Lewis forged with the Modern Jazz Quartet! The tunes are familiar ones, mostly, but arranged in a style that's got wonderfully sad and ... LP, Vinyl record album

Frank Sinatra

Frankie
Columbia, 1940s. Very Good
Frank Sinatra's way more than just the teen idol you'd expect from the cover and title – and instead works here as a fully-formed singer who'd go on to forever change the role of adult male vocals in American music! The work is all from Sinatra's early years on Columbia – arranged by ... LP, Vinyl record album

Weather Report

Mysterious Traveller
Columbia, 1974. Very Good+
A new sense of focus in the Weather Report sound – that building, soaring groove that would become the group's trademark in the mid 70s – offered up here in one of it's first and finest examples! The approach is one to describe accurately on paper – but which is instantly ... LP, Vinyl record album
