Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Used CD Grade

We only use the grade "Used CD" for non-new CDs. This all-encompassing grade was chosen it because we only buy and offer used CDs in the best possible condition.

When you purchase a used CD you can expect the disc to be free of all but the lightest of surface marks, the case to be clean (we often change the cases ourselves), and the booklet to be in good shape. Used CDs may show some signs of use, but if there are significant details or defects we will describe the item's condition (just like we do with LPs), so look for notes on cutout marks, stickers, promo stamps or other details before ordering.

All of our used CDs are guaranteed to play without skipping or flaws. After you receive a used CD from Dusty Groove, you have 1 week to play it to determine that it plays correctly. If it does not, you can request a return for a full refund.

Count Basie

Brand New Wagon
RCA/Bluebird, 1947. Used
Late 40s recordings that have the Basie band getting nice and lean – but still with vocals from Jimmy Rushing, tenor from Buddy Tate and Paul Gonsalves, and trumpet from Harry Sweets Edison! CD
Roulette, 1961. Used
A killer set from Count Basie – recorded during the height of his years at Roulette! The back cover of the record proclaims that "Basie Is Back Home" – clearly a bit by Birdland to lay claim to being the Count's home address, which is a bit of a challenge to his KC roots! ... CD

Music from Ike Quebec, Thad Jones, Thelonious Monk, Dexter Gordon, Sonny Clark, Herbie Nichols, Kenny Burrell & Grover Washingto0on, McCoy Tyner, Curtis Fuller, and Bob Brookmeyer & Bill Meyers. CD

Ran Blake

Film Noir
Novus/International Phonograph, 1980. Used Gatefold
One of the most evocative albums we've ever heard from pianist Ran Blake – a set that's got all the sharp edges of some of his most adventurous solo work, but one that also has Ran working in a few different settings, often with a very poetic feel! The set's not a hokey retro-crime record ... CD
Prestige (Japan), 1967. Used
A fantastically beautiful album that strongly proves the old jazz adage "It's not the song, but the singer"! The "singer" in this case is alto player Sonny Criss – and the songs are a middle of the road batch of compositions, like "Sunny", "Willow Weep For ... CD
Blue Note (Japan), 1960. Used
Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers, recording in the very familiar territory of the Birdland nightclub – in a format that was handled previously by the Blue Note label, but maybe never with a lineup this great! The performance features the sublime frontline trio of Lee Morgan on trumpet, ... CD

Steve Fishwick Quartet

Up Front
Hard Bop/Proper (UK), 2008. Used
We love the work of trumpeter Steve Fishwick in his hardbop quintet with tenorist Osian Roberts – but this set's a completely different outing – and one that shows an equally wonderful side of his talents! The set's a quartet date – Fishwick's trumpet amidst guitar, bass, and ... CD

Billy Bean/Walter Norris/Hal Gaylor

Trio (with bonus tracks)
Riverside/Fresh Sound (Spain), 1961/1962. Used
An ultra-hip trio with a very unique approach – Billy Bean on guitar, Walter Norris on piano, and Hal Galor on bass! CD includes six bonus tracks, also recorded in the early 60s! CD

Harold Land/Blue Mitchell Quintet

Concord/Bellaphon (Germany), 1977. Used
A real lost gem from the mid 70s – and one of the few albums ever recorded by the Harold Land/Blue Mitchell lineup! The group's got a warm fire that follows nicely off of Land's work with Bobby Hutcherson in the early 70s – but which also benefits from Mitchell's strongly flowing ... CD
