Maxayn

LP (Item 1429) Capricorn, 1972 — Condition: Near Mint-
Gatefold
Also available
Maxayn — Maxayn ... LP 13.99

The debut album from Maxayn – a funky female talent who deserves to be mentioned in the same territory as Betty Davis and Yvonne Fair! Like both of those artists, Maxayn isn't afraid to use an electric guitar when she wants – which puts her music somewhere in the territory of groups like The Bar-Kays and Black Nasty, and the way they could blend rock influences with funk and soul! No surprise, Maxayn's bandmates here include two members of Buddy Miles' group – who really help keep things deep – providing a massive foundation for the lady's incredible vocals. Titles include covers of the Stones' "You Can't Always Get What You Want" and "Gimme Shelter" – plus the original tunes "Trying For Days", "Jam For Jack", "Song", and "Doing Nothing Nothing Doing".  © 1996-2020, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Near Mint - (minus)

  • Black vinyl that may show a slight amount of dust or dirt.
  • Should still be very shiny under a light, even with slight amount of dust on surface.
  • One or two small marks that would make an otherwise near perfect record slightly less so. These marks cannot be too deep, and should only be surface marks that won't affect play, but might detract from the looks.
  • May have some flaws and discoloration in the vinyl, but only those that would be intrinsic to the pressing. These should disappear when the record is tilted under the light, and will only show up when looking straight at the record. (Buddah and ABC pressings from the 70's are a good example of this.)
  • May have some slight marks from aging of the paper sleeve on the vinyl.
  • Possible minor surface noise when played.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Capricorn, 1977. Near Mint-
Very much in the "Fifth Of Beethoven" mode – as a host of themes from classical composers get the Philly Disco treatment. Despite the title, though, the record was actually recorded in Europe, and really only earns its Philly tag through an adherence to a Sigma Sound style of ... LP, Vinyl record album

Escorts

3 Down 4 To Go
Alithia, 1974. Near Mint-
A great album of sweet soul – and one recorded by a bunch of prisoners at the Rahway Correctional Facility! This was the group's second album, and by this point, three of the members had left prison – hence the "3 Down, 4 To Go" title – but that change in status doesn't ... LP, Vinyl record album

Donny Hathaway/Quincy Jones

Come Back Charleston Blue
Atco, 1972. Near Mint-
An unusual album in the Atlantic career of Donny Hathaway – and a unique collaboration with the legendary Quincy Jones! The music here is Hathaway's sole entry into the blacksploitation soundtrack genre of the 70s – penned for film version of a Chester Himes novel, and scored in a mix ... LP, Vinyl record album

Stevie Wonder

Songs In The Key Of Life
Tamla, 1976. Very Good 2LP Gatefold
A sweet little double LP – one that had some folks saying that Stevie should have stayed away from the "2LP syndrome", but for us a real treasure with lots of hidden gems. Besides the hits "Isn't She Lovely" and "Sir Duke", which were more than enough to carry ... LP, Vinyl record album
Kent, Early 70s. Very Good
Hilarious! This is one of the raunchiest of the Rudy Ray Moore albums on Kent – and it's no surprise that it was issued on the label's "sensuous series"! Rudy and The Madam meet up on wax, and give sexual advice to the uninitiated. Side one lays it on the line directly, and side ... LP, Vinyl record album

Stevie Wonder

Music Of My Mind
Tamla, 1972. Very Good Gatefold
A pivotal album from Stevie Wonder – one of his first really heady records, and a tremendous little set from start to finish! The Wonder heard here is light years from the simple pop of the early days – really stretching out both as a songwriter and musician – coming up with a ... LP, Vinyl record album

Al Green

Livin For You
Hi Records, 1973. Very Good
Hard to go wrong with Al Green at this point – 1973, when the mighty one was at the height of his secular soul powers – and when the sweetly compressed production style of Willie Mitchell just couldn't miss! There's a homey, earthy feel to the record that's really great – a sound ... LP, Vinyl record album

Wham!

Wham!
GRT, 1978. Very Good
Kind of a rock/soul album – recorded in Nashville, but with a sound that reminds us of some of the east coast mid 70s underground, particularly the funky groups on Buddah and Scepter that had a crossover sound. Some tracks are uptempo, with a club-heavy string section – and others are ... LP, Vinyl record album

Al Cohn

Mr Music
RCA, 1954. Near Mint-
A tight little record – with a strong focus on Al Cohn's solo work! Al's the lead soloist in a number of largish groups that are often tightly arranged, but which let the leader break out nicely – cutting with an edge on his tenor that's sometimes even sharper than usual. Cohn handled ... LP, Vinyl record album

Big Nick
India Navigation, 1985. Near Mint-
Big Nick Nicholas is one of these lost tenor stars that you always hear whispers about, but can never find on wax. Years ago, Coltrane honored him with the great composition "Big Nick", but despite that fame, Nicholas had never cut a record as a leader until this obscure session in 1985. ...
