Anikana-o

LP (Item 14028) Salsoul, 1974/1978 — Condition: Very Good+

Early work by Kongas – recorded in France in the mid 70's, but released by Salsoul in the US in 1978. The group have an Afro Funk approach, filtered through more of a disco groove – long tracks with percussion and tribal touches, very rhythmically grooving all the way through. The album won't make you replace your Fela albums, but it does have some nice moments – and tracks include "Jungle", "Anikana-O", "Kongas Fun", and "Bongos Go".  © 1996-2020, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Very Good + (plus)

  • Vinyl should be very clean, but can have less luster than near mint.
  • Should still shine under a light, but one or two marks may show up when tilted.
  • Can have a few small marks that may show up easily, but which do not affect play at all. Most marks of this quality will disappear when the record is tilted, and will not be felt with the back of a fingernail.
  • This is the kind of record that will play "near mint", but which will have some signs of use (although not major ones).
  • May have slight surface noise when played.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Charo

Ole Ole
Salsoul, 1979. Very Good+ Gatefold
Everybody's favorite "cuchi-cuchi" girl shows her musical side in this trashed-out Salsoul set from the end of the 70s! Charo, apart from being well-built, sensual, and not ashamed to show it, is also a pretty decent guitarist, in a Spanish/flamenco mode. She plays a bit on the album ... LP, Vinyl record album

Ted Taylor

Ted Taylor 1976
TK/Alarm, 1976. Near Mint-
An overlooked set from Ted Taylor – one of those singers who kept moving around to different labels, never quite finding his home – but always doing some great work in the process! Ted's quite different here than on his 60s work for Okeh – much more in the southern soul territory ... LP, Vinyl record album

Millie Jackson

I Got To Try It One Time
Spring, 1974. Near Mint-
One of Millie's great early Spring LPs, with a deep hard soul sound that she never matched on later releases. Despite claim of the big hit on here "I Got To Try It One Time", Millie sounds like she's tried it a lot more than that, and you can hear the proof on tracks like "My Love ... LP, Vinyl record album

Just Family
Elektra, 1978. Near Mint-
This one's a real shift from her earlier jazz-based work, or her recent recordings for Verve – and a sweet funky fusion album that Dee Dee recorded for Elektra in the late 70s. The set was produced by Stanley Clarke, and has a soul/fusion sound that's not that different than his own work of ... LP, Vinyl record album

Millie Jackson

Live & Uncensored
Spring, 1979. Near Mint- 2LP Gatefold
Uncensored is right! Millie's live shows during the 70s were a lot raunchier than any of her records – and were usually filled with profanity, off-color jokes, and plenty of frank and foxy references to sex. She'd built her name on record through sweet heartbreaking southern soul sides ... LP, Vinyl record album

Temptations

Masterpiece
Gordy, 1973. Near Mint-
They certainly got the title right on this one – because the album's an early 70s masterpiece from the Temptations – one of the last in their legendary run of records with Norman Whitfield! By this point, the group are way past simple harmony soul – and are working with Whitfield ... LP, Vinyl record album
