7-inch, Vinyl record

Two wonderful cuts from David Bowie's Philly soul period! "Fame" is his classic collaboration with John Lennon – a tune with very wry lyrics, and a wonderfully funky groove too – one you'll recognize right away! "Right" is one that we love even more – a subtle bit of genius from that time when Bowie was recording at Sigma Sound with Luther Vandross – full of soul, and a surprisingly new deep side of his sound! We realize that there are many different interpretations of the standard grades used for pre-owned vinyl record albums & CD, so we thought we'd offer you the ones that we are working with, so you have an idea what we mean when we give the grade for a non-new item on our pages.

Used Vinyl Grades

Below are stated conditions for a used vinyl records at Dusty Groove. Grading for the cover should be assumed to be near (within a "+" or "-") the grading for the vinyl. If there is significant divergence from the condition of the vinyl, or specific flaws, these will be noted in the comments section of the item. However, please be aware that since the emphasis of this site is towards the music listener, our main concern is with the vinyl of any used item we sell. Additionally, please note that all of our records are graded visually; considering the volume of used vinyl we handle, it is impossible for us to listen to each record. If we spot any significant flaws, we make every attempt to listen through them and note how they play.

The following grading conditions apply to the vinyl component of an album or single:

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Vamp/Let Me Love You
Daran, Early 70s. Near Mint-
Excellent trippy instrumentals from Chicago! "The Vamp" has some great chromatic guitar – a bit like Cal Green, with touches of Wes Montgomery – over a hard rolling organ on the beat groove. Tasty stuff – the kind of single that would blow the speakers off your jukebox ... 7-inch, Vinyl record
Caravan (7 inch EP)

A cool pic sleeve EP with mid 40s performances of "Caravan", "Sophisticated Lady", "Perdido", and "Mood Indigo". 7-inch, Vinyl record
RCA, 1954. Near Mint- Gatefold (pic cover)
A tight little record – with a strong focus on Al Cohn's solo work! Al's the lead soloist in a number of largish groups that are often tightly arranged, but which let the leader break out nicely – cutting with an edge on his tenor that's sometimes even sharper than usual. Cohn handled ... 7-inch, Vinyl record
Panic Is On (3 x 7 inch EP)
RCA, Mid 50s. Near Mint- (pic cover)
No panic here – just tightly-crafted jazz, and one of the better RCA small combo sessions of the 50's! Trumpeter Nick Travis leads the group in that well-honed style that RCA was carving at the time – work that was as arranged as much of the recordings coming out of the west coast, but ... 7-inch, Vinyl record

The Natural Seven is Al's septet that features Joe Newman, Frank Rehack, Freddie Green, Milt Hinton, Nat Pierce, and Osie Johnson. O'Retta, Late 60s. Very Good+
Pre-Brunswick material by The Chi-Lites, arranged and produced by Johnny Cameron – with a sound that's more in keeping with the Chicago group soul sound than some of the group's later, sweeter work. Satellite, Late 60s. Near Mint-
Killer Northern soul from Chuck! "Funny Changes" has a snapping, clapping kind of groove that gets going from the get-go! The tune's propelled along by a fierce electric bassline – dancing, stepping, and turning round and round with a really joyous feel! "Every Hurt" is ... 7-inch, Vinyl record
Capitol, Mid 70s. Near Mint-
A weird one! "Neanderthal Man" has a slow, chunky, almost Afro-funky beat – but it's more of a mid 70s pop number, written and produced by Godley & Creme! The vocals are really really low in the mix – and most of what you hear is that hard chunky beat! "You Didn't ... 7-inch, Vinyl record
Windy C, Late 60s. Very Good-
Stunning single that includes 2 of the best tracks ever by this legendary soul group from Chicago! Written and produced by Curtis Mayfield, and with a sweet group sound that doesn't quit. "Danger!" was also sampled a few years ago, so you're bound to recognize it, too! 7-inch, Vinyl record
