LP (Item 13602) ABC, 1977 — Condition: Sealed

One of the few full albums ever cut by The Masqueraders – a stellar vocal group who recorded some excellent singles in the 60s, and were fortunate enough to be pulled into the big time by Isaac Hayes for his Hot Buttered Soul imprint on ABC! The band mixes their smooth Memphis style with some tighter arrangements by Ike and Lester Snell – and the result is a nice batch of modern soul tracks that keeps up the groove of the Hot Buttered sound nicely! Tracks include "Be For Real", "Runaway Slave", "It's A Terrible Thing To Waste Your Love", and "Love Between A Woman And A Man".  © 1996-2021, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(Still sealed! Cover has a cutout mark.)

Sealed

This is what it says, that the record is still held fast in shrink-wrap. We tend to be pretty suspicious about these things, so if the shrink-wrap doesn't look original, or if the record seems to have undergone some damage over time, we'll probably take it out of the wrapper to ensure that it's in good shape — which is why we don't have more of these. In some cases the shrink-wrap may be torn in spots, but if it's not possible the record has been taken out and played, the record will still qualify as "Sealed".

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Al Hudson & the Soul Partners

Especially For You
ABC, 1977. Near Mint-
Fantastic early work from Al Hudson – a record that's kind of a first chapter to all the excellent work by One Way to come – even though Al's not using that group name at this time! The record's got this cool, classy vibe – an update of an earlier Detroit soul mode, and one that ... LP, Vinyl record album

Brass Fever

Time Is Running Out
ABC, 1976. Near Mint-
Despite the name, and a concept that makes it seem like the record might be some throwaway disco set – the album's actually a good one, very much in the mode of the best uptempo soul on ABC at the time, but done without a vocalist. The album's arranged and conducted by McKinley Jackson, who ... LP, Vinyl record album

Ray Charles & Betty Carter

Ray Charles & Betty Carter
ABC, 1961. Very Good+
A classic album of soul duets – and one of the deeper records cut by Betty during the 60s! The arrangements are by the great Marty Paich, and although there's some singers in the background, the overall sound is still pretty nice and soulful. Betty's high voice works well with Ray's raspy ... LP, Vinyl record album
ABC, 1974. Near Mint-
Killer 70s work by the Four Tops – one of the group's best post-Motown albums, and a really hard-hitting batch of live tunes! There's a sound here that's grittier than just about any other Four Tops album – and that includes the classics for Motown – a style that brings together ... LP, Vinyl record album
ABC, 1973. Near Mint- 2LP Gatefold
A double album recorded for ABC after Charles left Warner Brothers and the 103rd Street Rhythm Band behind – but still very much an extension of that group's later stretched-out funky records! Nice long cuts with grooves that are a little bit more jazzy than his earlier 60's stuff. Tracks ... LP, Vinyl record album

Freddie Scott

Lonely Man
Columbia, Late 60s. Very Good+
An excellent album of uptown soul from Freddie – recorded after his work for Colpix, with arrangements by Belford Hendricks and Garry Sherman, in a sweet 60s New York mode! Freddie's vocals are great – much more mature than before, with a mixture of deep and sophisticated soul that ... LP, Vinyl record album

Carolyn Franklin

Baby Dynamite
RCA, 1969. Very Good+
Sock-hard soul from Aretha Franklin's funky sister! Jimmy Bee

Jimmy Bee Live
ALA, 1973. Very Good+ Gatefold
A tight little album of funky soul from Jimmy Bee! Two cuts, "Find Yourself" and "Talkin ... LP, Vinyl record album

Jimmie & Vella Cameron

Jimmie & Vella
Atlantic, 1972. Near Mint- Gatefold
Obscure bit of soul from this duo who also recorded an earlier record on Imperial. The vibe is sort of a straight 70s groove, and Vella's vocals are a bit more upfront than Jimmie's. The cuts are all originals, and titles include "Rain", "Chica Boom", "Door Is Open", ... LP, Vinyl record album

1990
Gordy, 1973. Near Mint-
One of the last totally righteous albums by the Temptations – recorded at the end of their progressive run at Motown, and done with some really hard-hitting tunes and production from Norman Whitfield! Tracks step off with that beautiful mix of badass soul, heavy production, and soaring ... LP, Vinyl record album

Turning Around
Atco, 1970. Very Good+
One of the greatest moments ever from Dee Dee Warwick – and a set that definitely shows her to be one of the more soulful members of her famous family! The set's got a much deeper soul sound than some of Dee Dee's other material – as Atlantic has Warwick working down at Criteria ... LP, Vinyl record album

New York Port Authority

Three Thousand Miles From Home
Invictus, 1977. Near Mint-
One of the funkiest groups on the Invictus label – a tight combo who've got some wonderful energy throughout!
