Love & Sunshine

LP (Item 13595) MPS, 1974 — Condition: Very Good+

One of those wonderful Monty Alexander albums from the 70s – recorded for the MPS label, and with a very different vibe than some of his later albums in the US! There's a warmth, flow, and soul here that comes through instantly – a way of fitting the piano right in with the rhythms, so that the tunes have this gentle glow and inherent warmth that really makes them sparkle! Part of the energy comes from the rhythm section – a trio that features Ernest Ranglin on guitar, Eberhard Weber on bass, and Kenny Clare on drums – and Weber's bass work is especially good, and there's lots of nice round funky moments in some of the best tracks. Titles include "Feel Like Making Love", "You Are The Sunshine Of My Life", and "SKJ".  © 1996-2021, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(70s US pressing. Cover has some light wear on the top seam, but this is a nice copy overall.)

Very Good + (plus)

  • Vinyl should be very clean, but can have less luster than near mint.
  • Should still shine under a light, but one or two marks may show up when tilted.
  • Can have a few small marks that may show up easily, but which do not affect play at all. Most marks of this quality will disappear when the record is tilted, and will not be felt with the back of a fingernail.
  • This is the kind of record that will play "near mint", but which will have some signs of use (although not major ones).
  • May have slight surface noise when played.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Count Basie

High Voltage
MPS, 1970. Near Mint-
Late niceness from Count Basie – and a set that definitely lives up to its name – a really high energy set, and one of the few times that Basie ever recorded for the MPS label! The group here works with sharp arrangements from Chico O'Farrill – who's got that punchy groove he was ... LP, Vinyl record album

George Gruntz

St Peter Power
MPS (Germany), 1968. Very Good Gatefold

Salsa Picante
MPS, 1978. Near Mint-

Friedrich Gulda

It's All One
MPS (Germany), 1970. Near Mint-
Amazing stuff – and one of the hippest records ever cut by pianist Friedrich Gulda! Chasin The Bird
MPS, 1977. Near Mint-

Verve, 1966. Very Good+
The second great session from two of Verve's biggest jazz stars of the 60s – organist Jimmy Smith and guitarist Wes Montgomery – an unlikely pair, to be sure, but one who work great together on the set! The real change here is in Wes' playing – as it's shifted from the mellower ... LP, Vinyl record album

Jack McDuff & David Newman

Double Barrelled Soul
Atlantic, 1968. Very Good+
One of the more open-ended sessions that Brother Jack cut for Atlantic – with less of the tight larger soul arrangements that the label usually saddled him with. (Not that we mind those, though!) Very sharp LP issue of some of the legendary late 40's bop recordings that were cut in New York under the leadership of Tadd Dameron! Don Patterson

Funk You
Prestige, 1969. Very Good+
A very cooking set by this great 60s organist – and one that has him leading a 2-horn frontline that includes Sonny Stitt and Charles McPherson.
