One of those wonderful Monty Alexander albums from the 70s – recorded for the MPS label, and with a very different vibe than some of his later albums in the US! There's a warmth, flow, and soul here that comes through instantly – a way of fitting the piano right in with the rhythms, so that the tunes have this gentle glow and inherent warmth that really makes them sparkle! Part of the energy comes from the rhythm section – a trio that features Ernest Ranglin on guitar, Eberhard Weber on bass, and Kenny Clare on drums – and Weber's bass work is especially good, and there's lots of nice round funky moments in some of the best tracks. Titles include "Feel Like Making Love", "You Are The Sunshine Of My Life", and "SKJ". (US pressing. Cover has a split top seam, tape along the bottom seam, and a name in marker on the front & back.)  © 1996-2017, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Very Good - (minus)

  • Vinyl may be dirty, and can lack a fair amount of luster.
  • Vinyl can have a number of marks, either in clusters or smaller amounts, but deeper.
  • This is the kind of record that you'd buy to play, but not because it looked that great. Still, the flaws should be mostly cosmetic, with nothing too deep that would ruin the overall record.
  • Examples include a record that has been kept for a while in a cover without the paper sleeve, or heavily played by a previous owner and has some marks across the surface. The record should play okay, though probably with surface noise.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Dynamite
MPS, 1978. Near Mint-
A looser, more free-swinging album than usual for Supersax – one that still has the group working with some key contributions from west coast jazz luminaries, but in a vibe that's almost more small combo than larger ensemble! The tracks here include a fair bit of Bud Powell and Charlie ... LP, Vinyl record album
Monty Strikes Again
MPS (Germany), 1974. Very Good-
One of the most obscure 70s albums by Monty Alexander for MPS – and a sweet set of piano grooves recorded live in 1974! The album features Monty's group with the great Ernest Ranglin on guitar – working in a mixture of straighter jazz and a few funky numbers that hang nicely on warm ... LP, Vinyl record album
Spunky
Pacific Jazz, Early 60s. Very Good-
Easily one of the best of Monty Alexander's early albums – and a nicely-grooving set of soul jazz numbers with a bouncy, bass-y finish! The core group on most of the set features Paul Humphrey on drums and Victor Gaskin on bass – but a few cuts have some added guitar, used mostly for ... LP, Vinyl record album
With Love
MPS/PA USA, 1972. Very Good+
Classic MPS session by funky pianist Monty Alexander! This one's filled with moody trio material, played by Alexander's tight little group with Senator Eugene Wright on bass and Bobby Durham on drums. Wright's basslines are nice and warm, and roll off in a groovy way with Alexander's tightly ... LP, Vinyl record album
MPS, 1976. Very Good+
A stone classic from pianist Monty Alexander – a live date recorded for MPS in the mid 70s, and a set with even more fire than his studio sides for the label! The sound here is quite freewheeling at times – not funky, but in a very romping, gutbuckety mode that marks Alexander as a ... LP, Vinyl record album
MPS (Germany), 1970. Very Good Gatefold
One of the more obscure albums that Eugen Cicero cut for the MPS label – still in the jazz-meets-classical vein of the rest, but featuring work by Franz Liszt, which maybe gives the whole thing a more fluid groove! The trio is Cicero's fantastic group with Charly Antolini on drums and Peter ... LP, Vinyl record album
Taste Of Freedom
MGM, 1970. Very Good
Massively groovy work from Monty Alexander – thanks to some hip, soulful backings from the legendary Johnny Pate! The sound here is a lot more swinging than some of Alexander's trio albums – much more of a Verve-styled session with fuller backings behind a main soloist – in this ... LP, Vinyl record album
Astral Signal
Blue Note, 1974. Very Good+
A masterpiece from Gene Harris – an album that's probably been his biggest influence on the sound of soul in the 21st Century, and for good reason too! The set moves way beyond both Harris' acoustic piano roots in the Three Sounds, and his other electric sides of the 70s – into sublime ... LP, Vinyl record album
Higher Ground
Kudu, 1973. Very Good
Massive work from Johnny Hammond – stretching out here in some totally jamming grooves that really transform his style for the 70s! The sound here is a lot hipper and tighter than some of Hammond's more rough-edged soul jazz of the 60s – a groove that's a great precursor to his more ... LP, Vinyl record album
Manhattan Symphonie
Columbia, 1978. Very Good+
Later genius from Dexter Gordon – an album recorded upon his return to the US in 1976, and done in a style that breaks the bounds of some of his sessions in Europe! Gordon seems to take new life in the recording – moving past the simple role of main soloist on familiar tunes, and ... LP, Vinyl record album
Columbia, 1961. Very Good-
Legendary early live work from Miles Davis – one of the first examples on record of the way that Davis could really stretch out in a concert setting! Just Friends
MPS, 1981. Very Good+
Mellow guitar/piano duets between Monty Alexander and his favorite bandmate, the Jamaican guitarist Ernest Ranglin. The tracks are relatively short, with mostly standards, done in a warm intimate way. Titles include "Con Alma", "Taboo", "Cruxian Dance", and "Lull ... LP, Vinyl record album
