In The Mood

LP (Item 1326) Columbia, 1979 — Condition: Very Good
Our favorite album ever from Tyrone Davis – even if it's completely different than most of his other work too! The set's got a wonderfully smooth feel right from the start – a mellow-grooving, slow-stepping approach that works perfectly for Tyrone's wonderful vocals – pushing them out of their bluesy roots, into a more sophisticated modern soul style that's mighty nice! The change is a key illustration of the way that Chicago soul was really growing in the 70s – moving into some of the richer territories that you'd find in work from Philly, too – and Davis' growth on a record like this is a real testament to his maturity as a singer. James Mack handled the arrangements – and titles include the sublime "In The Mood" – plus "You Know What To Do", "Keep On Dancin", "All The Love I Need", "I Don't Think You Heard Me", "Ain't Nothing I Can Do", and "I Can't Wait".  © 1996-2023, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(Includes the printed inner sleeve. Cover has light ringwear, edge wear, and small center splits in the spine and bottom seam.)

Very Good

  • Vinyl can have some dirt, but nothing major.
  • May not shine under light, but should still be pretty clean, and not too dirty.
  • May have a number of marks (5 to 10 at most), and obvious signs of play, but never a big cluster of them, or any major mark that would be very deep. Most marks should still not click under a fingernail.
  • May not look near perfect, but should play fairly well, with slight surface noise, and the occasional click in part of a song, but never throughout a whole song or more.
  • This is clearly a copy that was played by someone a number of times, but which could also be a good "play copy" for someone new.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Tyrone Davis

Can't You Tell It's Me
Columbia, 1979. Very Good
Fantastic mellow soul from Tyrone Davis – a great reminder that his vocals were still some of the burningest in 70s soul – sounding especially great in a record like this! Side one of the album's especially great – an all-mellow side that almost acts like some mini-suite of love ... LP, Vinyl record album

Tyrone Davis
High Rise, 1982. Near Mint-
Later work by Tyrone, but an excellent album of smooth modern soul tunes that builds off his strong work for Columbia! The album features a sublime stepper called "Are You Serious" – a great track that easily ranks with Tyrone's best work from later years – and the rest of ... LP, Vinyl record album

Marvin Gaye

Midnight Love
Columbia, 1982. Very Good
Marvin Gaye's last album ever – and a sensuous batch of grooves that almost return him to the sound of Let's Get It On! The style here is a bit more modern, but the sound is still great – a smoother approach to soul than most of Gaye's contemporaries at the time, recorded in a way that ... LP, Vinyl record album

Bill Withers

Menagerie
Columbia, 1977. Very Good
One of Bill Withers' greatest albums of the 70s – a set that has hip stepping off the acoustic sound of his Sussex records, into a warm and jazzy style that we like every bit as much as his earlier work! The album's got a wonderfully sophisticated jazzy vibe, and includes the excellent cut ... LP, Vinyl record album

Manhattans

Greatest Hits
Columbia, 1980. Near Mint-
The Manhattans were one of those groups who knocked around for years in the indie soul world – cutting some fantastic material early on, but then losing direction for a number of years until they sprung forth as a huge act for Columbia during the early 70s. By that time, the band had more ... LP, Vinyl record album

Earth Wind & Fire

All 'N All
Columbia, 1977. Very Good+ Gatefold
Genius, pure genius! It was hard for Earth, Wind & Fire to go wrong at this point – and the album's a stellar blend of jazz, funk, and soul, all done in that perfect style they'd hit by the mid 70s. And even though this one was a monster album, of the type that you see in everyone's ... LP, Vinyl record album

Luther Vandross

Busy Body
Columbia, 1983. Near Mint-
Classic 80s work from Luther Vandross – the kind of record that catapulted him from the soul music shadows into the major mainstream of the time! The style here is a fair bit more electric than some of Luther's music of the 70s, but the sound is still silky, soulful, and sensuous – ... LP, Vinyl record album
