Trouble, Heartaches, & Sadness – The Lost Fame Sessions Masters

LP (Item 132328) Fame/Parlophone (Germany), Early 70s — Condition: Sealed
A treasure trove of rare deep soul from the great Candi Staton – a female singer that we'd rank right up there with Mavis Staples and Bettye Lavette for sheer power and sense of feeling! Candi recorded her best early work for the Fame label in Muscle Shoals, but not all of it was issued back in the day – and this vinyl release brings together all of those rare tracks for the first time ever – really well-crafted material, not demo tracks or clunkers – but some overlooked gems, including cuts penned by the great George Jackson! All work features the crack Muscle Shoals musicians, and impeccable production by Rick Hall – and titles include "One More Hurt", "Slipping Away", "I'll Be Here", "Are You Just Building Me Up", "Trouble Heartaches & Sadness", "Do Right Woman", "I Gave A Little & Lost A Lot", "Where Were You", and "Spread Your Love On Me".  © 1996-2023, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Sealed

This is what it says, that the record is still held fast in shrink-wrap. We tend to be pretty suspicious about these things, so if the shrink-wrap doesn't look original, or if the record seems to have undergone some damage over time, we'll probably take it out of the wrapper to ensure that it's in good shape — which is why we don't have more of these. In some cases the shrink-wrap may be torn in spots, but if it's not possible the record has been taken out and played, the record will still qualify as "Sealed".

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Candi Staton

House Of Love
Warner, 1978. Very Good+
A perfect pairing of Candi Staton and producer Dave Crawford – that key southern soul talent who helped Candi and a few select others really step into the American soul mainstream at the end of the 70s! Roadshow, 1979. Very Good+
Great grooves from Enchantment – a set that has the group very much in their dancefloor-oriented mode, but still singing with some incredibly warm harmonies throughout! Roulette, 1977. Very Good+
A great album of jazzy club tracks – put together by John Usry Jr, who'd done some work with other 70s club acts like Three Degrees, Love Committee, and First Choice. Tamla, 1976. Very Good+ 2LP Gatefold
A sweet little double LP – one that had some folks saying that Stevie should have stayed away from the "2LP syndrome", but for us a real treasure with lots of hidden gems. Besides the hits "Isn't She Lovely" and "Sir Duke", which were more than enough to carry ... LP, Vinyl record album

A very different take on this score than the vocal one – thanks to great work from Victor Feldman on both piano and vibes – in a hip trio with Bob Whitlock on bass, and the great LA drummer Lawrence Marable – who really keeps things great at the bottom! Quite an unusual session for Freddie Hubbard – one of his most modernist albums for Blue Note, recorded with a larger group that includes James Spaulding on alto and flute, Joe Henderson (or Hank Mobley) on tenor, McCoy Tyner on piano, and the surprising inclusion of Kiane Zawadi on euphonium! ...
