Whatcha See Is Whatcha Get

LP (Item 13199) Stax/Volt, 1971 — Condition: Very Good
Gatefold
A fantastic album by The Dramatics – with a harder funkier sound than you'll find on most of their other records of the time – a gritty gem from the group's early years, and a record that really deserves its placement on the Stax label! The record has the group moving into a post-Temptations style of righteous soul – grooving hard with a really heavy bottom on funky numbers like "Get Up and Get Down" and "Whatcha See Is Whatcha Get", and even dropping a bit of a drug reference on the cut "Marry Don't Cha Wanna" – one of those messed-up lyric numbers we'd expect from a Latin Soul group! But the album's also got a sweet side too – as it features the amazing ballad cut "In The Rain", which has some of the most amazing production you'll ever find on the Stax label – harmony work that rivals the greatness of the east coast scene of the time. Other tracks include "Gimme Some", "Thank You For Your Love", and "Hot Pants In The Summertime".  © 1996-2025, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(Original orange label Volt pressing. Cover has edge wear and light surface wear.)

Very Good

  • Vinyl can have some dirt, but nothing major.
  • May not shine under light, but should still be pretty clean, and not too dirty.
  • May have a number of marks (5 to 10 at most), and obvious signs of play, but never a big cluster of them, or any major mark that would be very deep. Most marks should still not click under a fingernail.
  • May not look near perfect, but should play fairly well, with slight surface noise, and the occasional click in part of a song, but never throughout a whole song or more.
  • This is clearly a copy that was played by someone a number of times, but which could also be a good "play copy" for someone new.

Condition Notes

If something is relevant, we try to describe it in the notes — especially if it is release or pressing details, or an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

ABC, 1978. Very Good+
Although not as instantly captivating as their work for Stax, this set for ABC is still a pretty darn great group soul album! The group haven't lost their touch vocally – and Ron Banks and LJ Reynolds are still incredible singers that push smooth soul to a whole new level. The album ... LP, Vinyl record album

Sam & Dave

Soul Men
Stax, 1967. Near Mint-
One of the best-ever albums by this incredible soul duo! Sam & Dave may have been one of the bigger names on the 60s scene, but they also had a sheer raw soul approach that blew away most of their contemporaries – a way of trading vocal lines then combining them that infused their songs ... Dorothy Moore

Time Out For Me
Volt, 1988. Sealed
Later work from Dorothy – but not a bad album of modern southern soul, done in a style that's somewhat like her work for Malaco. Tracks include "Walk Through This Pain", "Endless Summer Nights", "He May Not Be Mine", "I Still Get Turned On", "Whate ... LP, Vinyl record album

James Brown

Grits & Soul
Smash, 1964. Very Good+
One of the grooviest of the James Brown instrumental albums on Smash Records from the 60s – a set that's overflowing with long original tracks, and less of the remakes that James did on some of the others! The James Brown band is in full effect – and Brown turns out some great Hammond ... LP, Vinyl record album

Dr John

Babylon
Atco, 1968. Very Good+ Gatefold
Seminal work from Dr John – one of his key late 60s albums that set the world on fire at the time – and which still stand as some of the doctor's greatest achievements! The approach here is a fantastic abstraction of older New Orleans roots – not nearly as rigid as in some of ... LP, Vinyl record album
Curtom, 1975. Very Good+
A great album by Curtis Mayfield – filled with some excellent lesser-known gems! There's No Place Like America was Curtis' scathing testament to the State Of The Union – and it's got a hip political tone that's right up there with the best of his early 70s songwriting – perhaps ... A late 80s winner from The Whispers – one of the few 70s groups who really found a way to keep themselves going strong into the next decade! The album gave the group their super-huge hit "Rock Steady" – possibly their biggest mainstream success ever – and it's got the ... LP, Vinyl record album

Indestructible
Arista, 1988. Very Good+
Indestructible sounds from The Four Tops – a set that still has the legendary quartet going strong!
