Close Your Eyes (180 gram pressing)

LP (Item 131858) Candid/Pure Pleasure (UK), 1997 — Condition: Sealed
2LP Gatefold
One of the first albums ever recorded by UK jazz singer Stacey Kent – the start of a great run of albums that would bring the vocalist great fame in the decade to come! The style here is nice and laidback – that strong commitment to reviving jazz vocal modes that made Kent such a standout in a generation of smoother jazz artists – a real no-nonsense approach that has Stacey singing strongly with backing from a small, tight combo! Players include Jim Tomlinson on tenor, Colin Oxley on guitar, and David Newton on piano – all of whom really flesh out the colors of the tunes, on titles that include "There's No You", "It's Delovely", "Close Your Eyes", "Dream Dancing", "Day In Day Out", "Sleep Warm", "Little White Lies", and "You Go To My Head".  © 1996-2023, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(Sealed copy!)

Sealed

This is what it says, that the record is still held fast in shrink-wrap. We tend to be pretty suspicious about these things, so if the shrink-wrap doesn't look original, or if the record seems to have undergone some damage over time, we'll probably take it out of the wrapper to ensure that it's in good shape — which is why we don't have more of these. In some cases the shrink-wrap may be torn in spots, but if it's not possible the record has been taken out and played, the record will still qualify as "Sealed".

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Sheila Jordan

Portrait Of Sheila
Blue Note, 1962. Near Mint-
One of the only two vocal jazz albums that the Blue Note label recorded back in the day – and a haunting batch of tracks from a young Sheila Jordan! The style here is quite different than that of Jordan's later, more experimental records – and this early session shows her as an ... LP, Vinyl record album

Teri Thornton

Devil May Care
Riverside, 1961. Near Mint-
One of the best albums from singer Teri Thornton – a jazz vocalist who was really starting to come into her own at the beginning of the 60s, and shines here in a way that's different from some of her bigger label sets! Backings are by Norman Simmons – a pianist we love on his own, and ... LP, Vinyl record album
Philips, Mid 60s. Very Good+
Don't let the "broadway" or the "blues" or the "ballads" in the title put you off – because this album's way more than any of those! As usual, Nina takes tunes that have common roots and she makes them all her own – working here with arrangements by Horace ... LP, Vinyl record album

Joya Sherrill

Joya Sherrill Sings Duke
20th Century, 1965. Very Good+
One of the best recordings we've heard from Joya Sherrill – a set that has her taking on the music of Duke Ellington, but handling things with a cool sort of 60s feel! The arrangements are nice and lean – handled by Mercer Ellington, and featuring players who include Cootie Williams on ... LP, Vinyl record album

Carmen McRae

Can't Hide Love
Blue Note, 1976. Near Mint-
Sweet soul from Carmen McRae – a great 70s album for Blue Note, and one that has the classic singer moving into some very groovy material! The feel here is much more soul than jazz – at least the jazz of the torchy style from Carmen's roots – but as you'd guess from McRae, the ... LP, Vinyl record album

Lee Wiley

West Of The Moon
RCA, 1956. Near Mint-
A great set of torchy ballads from Lee Wiley – a singer who virtually helped invent the genre on record with her classic sets for Columbia Records! Blossom Dearie

Positively Vol 7
Daffodil, 1983. Near Mint-
One of the great albums issued by Blossom Dearie on her own Daffodil label – a laidback set with plenty of electric piano, which we always love alongside Blossom's vocals! Mike Renzi adds in additional keyboards next to Blossom's electric lines, making for a super-warm sound – but one ... LP, Vinyl record album

Eddie Jefferson

Things Are Getting Better
Muse, 1974. Very Good+
One of the weirdest, wildest albums ever from Eddie Jefferson – a real standout classic that shows him retooling his sound for the 70s! Oscar Brown Jr.

Between Heaven & Hell
Columbia, 1962. Very Good+
Great early work from Oscar Brown Jr – a hip mix of jazz and soul, working in Brown's unique sense of showmanship, and his almost beat-like flair with a lyric! Ralph Burns and Quincy Jones handled the arrangements – and the album's filled with great original tracks by Brown, including ... LP, Vinyl record album
