Alicia

LP (Item 13068) MCA, 1981 — Condition: Very Good
Massive work from Alicia Myers – a set that's right up there with her One Way recordings, but with some deeper, more personal touches as well! Production is by Kevin McCord and Al Perkins from the One Way camp – and they bring in a nice mix of the funkier numbers that group was known for, and some warmer, mellower cuts that really show Myers maturing as a soul singer – a depth that might not have been expected a few years before, and which should have made her a bigger act for years to come after this wonderful set! The setting really lets Alicia open up on vocals, singing with a power and presence that's really great – and titles include "We Can't Stay In Bed Forever", "Don't Stop What You're Doin", "I Want To Thank You", "If You Play Your Cards Right", "Reggae Funky Dance", "Reservation For One", and "Life Joy & Happiness".  © 1996-2024, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Very Good

  • Vinyl can have some dirt, but nothing major.
  • May not shine under light, but should still be pretty clean, and not too dirty.
  • May have a number of marks (5 to 10 at most), and obvious signs of play, but never a big cluster of them, or any major mark that would be very deep. Most marks should still not click under a fingernail.
  • May not look near perfect, but should play fairly well, with slight surface noise, and the occasional click in part of a song, but never throughout a whole song or more.
  • This is clearly a copy that was played by someone a number of times, but which could also be a good "play copy" for someone new.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Rufus

Rufus
MCA, 1973. Near Mint- Gatefold
An amazing debut from Rufus – a group so great, they were virtually a genre unto themselves during the 70s! Rufus came from the same totally hip Chicago scene that gave the world Minnie Riperton and Earth Wind & Fire – and like both of those greats, these guys have a way of drawing ... War

Galaxy
MCA, 1977. Near Mint-
A massive jammer from War – and a record that brought the group to a whole new generation of listeners – as well as a good number of later fans who discovered some of these jams in the club! The groove here isn't disco, but this tightening up of War's sweet jamming vibe – almost ... LP, Vinyl record album

Martha Reeves

Martha Reeves
MCA, 1974. Near Mint-
Martha Reeves' first solo album for MCA – an all-out studio affair that's quite different from her classic 60s work for Motown! The album's done in a way that really focuses on the deepest side of Martha's vocals – in a way that goes for the sort of "rootsy" soul that was ... LP, Vinyl record album

Dramatics

10 1/2
MCA, 1980. Sealed
The Dramatics hit an 80s groove mood here – and as on their clubbier sides from the end of the 70s, the vocals are still wonderful – and more than anything, the set's a strong soul-based set that still has the group at the top of their game! Ballads actually sparkle the best here ... LP, Vinyl record album

New Edition

Under The Blue Moon
MCA, 1986. Sealed
New Edition show they're no Johnnies-come-lately on the harmony soul scene – and pay tribute to a host of older groups from the 50s and 70s – singing a mix of hits and soul classics in a laidback late nite mode that brings a real focus on their vocals. Given their age, there's a sound ... LP, Vinyl record album
MCA, 1979. Sealed
Smooth stepping grooves from The Floaters – still very much in the nicely compressed mode of their more famous debut, and getting some nice production help here from Eugene McDaniels! There's a righteous punch to the record that really shows the influence of McDaniels – a way of ... LP, Vinyl record album

Calling All Beatniks
Passport, 1984. Near Mint-
Post-August Darnell work by Dr Buzzard's Savannah Band – no longer using the "original" in their name! There's still a retro-styled feel here overall – with some of the swing-esque modes of earlier albums, but also a bit of rockabilly as well – an element that kind of ... LP, Vinyl record album

Billy Ocean

Tear Down These Walls
Jive, 1988. Near Mint-
A big one for Billy Ocean – and a set that has the singer sounding even more confident and powerful than ever before!
