Funky Christmas

LP (Item 13051) Cotillion, 1976 — Condition: Very Good+
One of the greatest Christmas albums of the 70s – a landmark assemblage of some of the hippest soul music talents of the time – offering up a host of different tracks that have gone onto become classics over years! Most artists were working for Atlantic/Cotillion Records at the time, but the set seems to bring in a few surprising guest stars too – and the big highlight is the album's work by a young Luther Vandross – the perennial classic "May Christmas Bring You Happiness", a 70s Christmas tune on a par with "This Christmas", and his mellower "At Christmas Time". Other tracks are mostly standards, and titles include "The Christmas Song" and 'White Christmas" by John Edwards, "Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas" and I'll Be Home For Christmas" by Willis Jackson, and "I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus" and "Silent Night" by The Impressions. Also includes "Feeling Like Christmas" and "Christmas Gift" by Margie Joseph, both by Lamont Dozier, who also produced the tracks!  © 1996-2024, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Very Good + (plus)

  • Vinyl should be very clean, but can have less luster than near mint.
  • Should still shine under a light, but one or two marks may show up when tilted.
  • Can have a few small marks that may show up easily, but which do not affect play at all. Most marks of this quality will disappear when the record is tilted, and will not be felt with the back of a fingernail.
  • This is the kind of record that will play "near mint", but which will have some signs of use (although not major ones).
  • May have slight surface noise when played.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Volt, 1973. Very Good+ Gatefold
Fantastic early work from The Dramatics – an amazing blend of sweet soul harmony vocals, Memphis soul production, and some other-worldly songwriting that far surpasses later work of the group. This album's one of the band's most righteous, with a mixture of Curtom-type message cuts and ... LP, Vinyl record album

Aalon

Cream City
Arista, 1977. Very Good
Sweet modern soul with a sound that would get picked up on years later by the LA G-Funk scene. The album's produced by War's Far Out production team – and it's got a smooth sound that's mixed with moogy keyboards and compressed instrumentation on the best cuts. Some tracks are a bit too ... Bell, 1968. Very Good
This is the second version of an album that was first pressed under the title Back On Top – repackaged here with a slicker cover during the early 70s, to cash in on the fame that the O'Jays were having at Phily International. Although the group's Philly recordings are always touted as some ... LP, Vinyl record album

'80
Chi Sound/20th Century, 1980. Very Good+
A nice record of modern soul that got a bit overlooked at the time because of the poor fate of the Chi-Sound label. The record's filled with Chicago soul talent like Tom Tom 84, Sonny Sanders, and Carl Davis, and it's a good updating of Gene's Chicago soul sound towards a style that's more modern ... Stax, 1969. Very Good+ 2LP Gatefold
A landmark double LP collection of work from Stax Records – issued at the end of the 60s, after their split with Atlantic – and a real celebration of the new life that was coming to the label at the time! The range of work is really great, and the 28 track set moves easily from hits to ... LP, Vinyl record album
