Funky Christmas

LP (Item 13051) Cotillion, 1976 — Condition: Near Mint-
One of the greatest Christmas albums of the 70s – a landmark assemblage of some of the hippest soul music talents of the time – offering up a host of different tracks that have gone onto become classics over years! Most artists were working for Atlantic/Cotillion Records at the time, but the set seems to bring in a few surprising guest stars too – and the big highlight is the album's work by a young Luther Vandross – the perennial classic "May Christmas Bring You Happiness", a 70s Christmas tune on a par with "This Christmas", and his mellower "At Christmas Time". Other tracks are mostly standards, and titles include "The Christmas Song" and 'White Christmas" by John Edwards, "Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas" and I'll Be Home For Christmas" by Willis Jackson, and "I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus" and "Silent Night" by The Impressions. Also includes "Feeling Like Christmas" and "Christmas Gift" by Margie Joseph, both by Lamont Dozier, who also produced the tracks!  © 1996-2025, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(Cover has a cutout notch, light wear, and aging.)

Near Mint - (minus)

  • Black vinyl that may show a slight amount of dust or dirt.
  • Should still be very shiny under a light, even with slight amount of dust on surface.
  • One or two small marks that would make an otherwise near perfect record slightly less so. These marks cannot be too deep, and should only be surface marks that won't affect play, but might detract from the looks.
  • May have some flaws and discoloration in the vinyl, but only those that would be intrinsic to the pressing. These should disappear when the record is tilted under the light, and will only show up when looking straight at the record. (Buddah and ABC pressings from the 70's are a good example of this.)
  • May have some slight marks from aging of the paper sleeve on the vinyl.
  • Possible minor surface noise when played.

Condition Notes

If something is relevant, we try to describe it in the notes — especially if it is release or pressing details, or an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Jimmy Castor Bunch

It's Just Begun
RCA, 1972. Near Mint-
Wickedly fuzzy funk! Jimmy Castor recorded in a lot of different styles during the 70s – but the one he used on this album is still his best – and the album may well be his lasting testament of funky genius! The record's a non-stop guitar-heavy batch of classic funk tracks – and ... LP, Vinyl record album
Hot Wax, Early 70s. Very Good-
An excellent batch of hard soul grooves from the great Laura Lee! This one was her first for the Hot Wax label – and it's got the raw quality of her earlier singles for labels like Chess, with a hard vocal style that's very much in the Aretha Franklin/Fontella Bass camp – plus some ... LP, Vinyl record album
Gordy, 1983. Near Mint-
One of the crown jewels of the Rick James empire – back when he had an empire! Stone City Band were a slap-bass modern soul combo, with a definite 80s groove sound that had strong ties to James' own funky style. Their best moments on here, though, are actually the mellower ones – as ... LP, Vinyl record album

Smiley Lewis

No No
Imperial, Mid 1950s. Sealed
Great work from early New Orleans soul legend Smiley Lewis! Lewis recorded a lot of hip, soulful Crescent City R&B with producer Dave Barthlolmew, and is characterized here as the "bad luck singer" for his lack of a huge hit to push into the seminal status of some of his ... LP, Vinyl record album

Charles Williams

Love Is A Very Special Thing
EMI (Finland), 1975. Near Mint- Gatefold
Finnish soul, by an American singer – not the same Charles Williams that you might know from 70s jazz funk albums – but an even earlier talent, really shining brightly here in a soulful Scandinavian setting! The album's a really lost rare groove treasure – a record that almost ... LP, Vinyl record album
