Switched-On Rock

LP (Item 1295) Columbia, Late 60s — Condition: Very Good+

Acid rocky moogy stuff! The record's one of those "let's do a lot of pop covers on the moog" – and it features moogy updates of 60's tunes like "Get Back", "Jumpin' Jack Flash", "Feelin' Groovy", "Yummy Yummy Yummy", and "Time of the Season", which sounds the best of all the tracks. Russ Barnard put the whole thing together, and it's got a very groovy sound!  © 1996-2020, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(360 Sound stereo pressing. Cover has light wear.)

Very Good + (plus)

  • Vinyl should be very clean, but can have less luster than near mint.
  • Should still shine under a light, but one or two marks may show up when tilted.
  • Can have a few small marks that may show up easily, but which do not affect play at all. Most marks of this quality will disappear when the record is tilted, and will not be felt with the back of a fingernail.
  • This is the kind of record that will play "near mint", but which will have some signs of use (although not major ones).
  • May have slight surface noise when played.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Kirby Stone Four

Baubles, Bangles & Beads
Columbia, 1958. Very Good+
The Kirby Stone Four were not always as right-on as other vocal quartets of their time, like the Four Freshmen or Hi-Lo's – but this album is one of their best, and features the group grooving in a tight harmony sound, with little of the "comedy" that sometimes mars other albums. ... Kirby Stone Four

Go Sound
Columbia, 1959. Very Good
The Kirby Stone Four took the jazz vocal harmony style of groups like the Four Freshmen or The Hi Los, and they punched it up a bit, adding in a bit of humor and showmanship, in a mode that made them very popular with the live audiences in the Nevada clubs that were often their home turf. Voices of Walter Schumann

Exploring the Unknown
RCA, 1955. Very Good
One of the postwar space-age classics! The normally-sleepy chorus of Walter Schumann is used to create the backdrop for a narrative of space flight – read by Paul Frees, and involving the takeoff of a rocket from the Pacific, soaring into space, past the moon, and arriving on Venus. Dick Hyman

Age Of Electronicus
Command, 1969. Near Mint- Gatefold
Nice one! This is one of Dick Hyman's most fantastic LPs, and the one that includes some of his best moogy playing. With the very funky club cut "Give It Up Or Turn It Loose", plus "Both Sides Now", "Kolumbo", "Time Is Tight", and "Green Onions". LP, Vinyl record album
Command, 1969. Very Good+ Gatefold
Groovy electronic pop stuff from the great Command label! Not as wild as Dick Hyman, but still pretty darn nice, and with a good groovy feel, accented by some nice "Latin" touches. Titles include "Girl From Ipanema", "Dansero", "Look Of Love", "Hare ... LP, Vinyl record album
