Art Blakey & The Jazz Messengers — Ritual ... CD 18.99

A hard-swinging cooker from Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers – recorded during the landmark year of 1957 – when Blakey's group was open to recording for a number of different labels, in a number of different settings! The set was originally done for the west coast stalwart Pacific Jazz, but it's got a sound that's much more in the hardbop mode of the New York scene – all the fire and intensity that Blakey first cooked up for Blue Note, cast out with a slight sense of openness here in the less iconic setting. Players include Jackie McLean on alto, Bill Hardman on trumpet, and Sam Dockery on piano – and the album's right up there with Vik/RCA, Savoy, and Chess material they cut at the time. Tracks include "Touche", "Sam's Tune", "Once Upon A Groove", and "Wake Up". (Red label pressing with deep groove. Cover has moderate wear and has fully split top & bottom seams.)  © 1996-2015, Dusty Groove, Inc.

We realize that there are many different interpretations of the standard grades used for pre-owned vinyl record albums & CD, so we thought we'd offer you the ones that we are working with, so you have an idea what we mean when we give the grade for a non-new item on our pages.

Used Vinyl Grades

Below are stated conditions for a used vinyl records at Dusty Groove. Grading for the cover should be assumed to be near (within a "+" or "-") the grading for the vinyl. If there is significant divergence from the condition of the vinyl, or specific flaws, these will be noted in the comments section of the item. However, please be aware that since the emphasis of this site is towards the music listener, our main concern is with the vinyl of any used item we sell. Additionally, please note that all of our records are graded visually; considering the volume of used vinyl we handle, it is impossible for us to listen to each record. If we spot any significant flaws, we make every attempt to listen through them and note how they play.

The following grading conditions apply to the vinyl component of an album or single:

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Pacific Jazz, 1958. Very Good
One of 2 wonderful sides that Gill Evans cut for the World Pacific label, both sets of modernist renditions of classic standards. Recorded in New York in 1958, with an great group featuring Johnny Coles, Cannonball Adderley, and Evans himself. As you'd expect Evans' super-sharp arrangements ... LP, Vinyl record album

Brass Bag
Pacific Jazz, Early 60s. Very Good-
A gem of an album – and one of the few rare sides cut by trumpeter Carmell Jones! The album features some hip early 60s LA soul jazz arrangements by Gerald Wilson – played by a group that features work by Jones, trombonists Tricky Lofton and Lou Blackburn, and pianist Frank Strazzeri. ... Reunion With Chet Baker
Pacific Jazz, 1957. Very Good
Late 50's session in which Gerry Mulligan and Chet Baker try to recreate the sound that made them a legend on the West Coast in the first place. Cool breezy renditions of a number of standards, held down by the drumming of Dave Bailey and the bass of Henry Grimes, which is a nice treat on an album ... LP, Vinyl record album

Pacific Jazz, Mid 50s. Very Good+
Great work from Chet Baker's famous, and famously short-lived pianist! Chet Baker joins the group on one track – and the core trio features Carson Smith on bass and Peter Littman on drums. Original tunes include "Albuquerque Social Swim", "Yellow Tango", "Crutch For ... LP, Vinyl record album
